Hosts Tanzania came from behind to beat Uganda 2-1 in the first leg of the Under-20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers on Sunday evening at the National Stadium, Dar es Salaam.

Striker Julieth Nalukenge put the visitors up front early in the second half before Tanzania came back scoring two goals through Diana Msewa and Opa Clement to seal the crucial home victory.

Uganda dominated the game, pressing high and created several chances which kept Tanzania defensive pair Enekia Kasonga and Janeth Christopher on their toes.

Tanzania goalkeeper, Asha Ismail denied Nakulenge her brace as the hosts held on to victory ahead of the return leg in a fortnight in Kampala.

Tanzania coach Bakari Shime said: “It was a good tactical game for both teams. It has been a good experience for my team, coming from behind to win.

“It is the first time that we’ve managed to win after going down. We played well though later we lost possession. We had to change tactics later to adopt with the momentum of the game and luckily we won.

Uganda coach Oliver Mbekeka said: “I can say that we haven’t lost the tie, 2-1 away, is a good result. I congratulate my players, they played very well, and I didn’t expect that.

“We are looking forward to the return leg.
