- Several major sporting events have happened across the world since the start of this year.
- The Women’s Euro tournament, the Winter Olympics, British Grand Prix, World Championships and Commonwealth Games are among the sporting events which have happened.
- The FIFA World Cup and the long-awaited Rugby League World Cup are among 2022’s unmissable events yet to take place.
Several major sporting events have happened since the start of this year. And there are more to come before the end of the year.
Some big sporting events that happened earlier this year were the Winter Olympics, Winter Paralympics and the Women’s Euro 2022.

A total of five football finals for the 2021-22 season were played between May 14 and May 28. The finals include FA Cup, Women’s FA Cup, Europa League, Scottish Cup, Europa Conference League and the UEFA Champion League.
England men’s cricket team hosted New Zealand, India and South Africa for the final Test between June 2 and September 12.
The 2022 Wimbledon Championships is one of the major sporting events which have happened this year. The tournament happened between June 27 and July 10 at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.
The 2022 British Grand Prix happened on July 3 at the Silverstone Circuit in Northamptonshire, England.
The UEFA European Women’s Football Championship took place from July 7 to August 1 in England. The Lionesses won the tournament after beating Germany in the finals.
Since the Euros tournament, major sporting events which have followed include Golf, World Championships (Athletics), Commonwealth Games and European Championships.
Major Sporting Events Yet To Happen This Year
1. Women’s Rugby World Cup
The Women’s Rugby World Cup tournament will happen this year in New Zealand from October 8 to November 12. The teams at the rugby tournament will only be playing during the weekends.
The two top teams from each pool and the two best third-placed teams will advance to the quarter-finals.
New Zealand, who are the hosts, will play in quarter-finals 2 if they manage to advance past the group stages.
England, who recently emerged as winners in the Six Nations, are the favourites to win the World Cup tournament.
2. Rugby League World Cup
The long-awaited Rugby League World Cup will be played in England from October 15 up to November 19.
The Rugby League World Cup features 61 games and separate tournaments for men, women and players on wheelchair.

The tournament’s first game will take place at St. James’ Park in Newcastle.
Manchester will have the golden opportunity to host the men’s and women’s double-header final as well as the wheelchair final.
The men’s and women’s double-header final will take place at Old Trafford, whereas the wheelchair final will be held at Manchester Central.
3. Men’s T20 World Cup
The Men’s T20 World Cup is one of the major sporting events yet to happen this year. The tournament’s matches will take place in seven Australian cities; Adelaide, Geelong, Sydney, Brisbane, Hobart, Perth and Melbourne.

The final match of the Men’s T20 World Cup will take place at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
The T20 World Cup will commence on October 16 and end on November 13. The tournament was initially supposed to take place in 2020 but was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The tournament’s host, Australia, are the defending champions.
4. FIFA World Cup
The 2022 FIFA World Cup will take place in Qatar between November 20 and December 18. It will be the first World Cup to be held in the Arab world.
A total of 32 teams have qualified for the prestigious football tournament, which happens once every four years.
The first match of the World Cup tournament will be between hosts Qatar and Ecuador at Al Bayt Stadium, Al Khor.
The two teams which will make it to the finals will face each other at the Lusail Stadium in Doha the week before Christmas.
The teams will play their group matches across eight stadiums; Al Janoub Stadium, Education City Stadium, Al Bayt Stadium, Al Thumama Stadium, Khalifa International Stadium, Ras Abu Aboud Stadium, Lusail Stadium and Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium.
