Tanzania, Djibouti through to CHAN second round qualification

• The second round of qualification are set for next month
• Kenya is not playing due to a FIFA suspension
• Ghana have also qualified for the next round

Tanzania’s Taifa Stars and Djibouti have both progressed to the second round of qualification for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) after winning their respective first round second leg games om Saturday.

Tanzania saw off Somalia 2-1 in the second leg of the first round played this afternoon at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam. The win saw coach Kim Poulsen’s team qualify on a 3-1 goal aggregate.

The Somalians are using Tanzania as their home ground with none in their Mogadishu home approved to host international matches.

Abdul Suleiman ‘Sopu’ gave Taifa Stars the lead after 34 minutes before Farhaan Mohamed made it 1-1 after 48 minutes. It was Dickson Job who netted Tanzania’s second goal in the 64th minute.

Somalia score late but can’t recover

Somalia scored late on, but it was mere consolation as they couldn’t mount a commendable comeback.

Meanwhile, Djibouti also qualified for the second round after seeing off Burundi on Friday in Dar es Salaam. After losing the first leg 2-1, Djibouti also won the second leg by the same margin and went on to win on penalties 4-2.

Tanzania will now face Uganda Cranes in the second round next month, while Djibouti will take on Sudan and Ethiopia battle Rwanda. The winners of each tie will book a slot in the 2023 CHAN set to be staged in Algeria.

Meanwhile, Ghana have also qualified for the second qualification round and will look to earn a CHAN ticket after missing the last three editions.

Shining Ghana match on

The Black Galaxies beat Benin 1-0 at Cotonou’s Stade de l’Amitié to complete the double over their West African opponents and advance to the next round. They progressed with a 4-0 aggregate victory after winning the first leg 3-0 in Cape Coast last week.

Hearts of Oak striker Daniel Afriyie Barnieh, who scored the first goal in the first leg, produced the winner in Cotonou, scoring in the 82nd minute.

Ghana will face Nigeria in the final round of qualification for the 2022 African Nations Championship after defeating Benin. Ghana’s last appearance at the CHAN was in 2014 in South Africa where they lost on on penalties to Libya in the final.

At the same time, Senegal has also qualified despite losing at home at the Abdoulaye Wade stadium 2-1 against Liberia.

Despite this setback at home, Senegal qualified for the next round. They had won 3-0 in Liberia in the first leg. The Senegalese will face Guinea in the second and final round of qualification.
