South Africa unveil squad for 2020 IAAF World U-20 Champs - Sports Leo

A strong Preparation Squad, featuring some of the nation’s most talented young track and field prospects, has been unveiled by Athletics South Africa (ASA) in the build-up to the 2020 IAAF World U-20 Championships to be held in Nairobi, Kenya.

The ASA preparation squad includes 34 athletes in individual events (18 men and 16 women), as well as full 4x100m and 4x400m relay squads.

The men’s contingent includes the likes of sprinter Luke Davids, who secured gold in the 100m final at last year’s Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires and rising pole vault star Kyle Rademeyer, who shattered the SA youth record earlier this season.

Perhaps boasting even more quality and depth is the women’s contingent which includes the likes of sprinter Rose Xeyi and 400m hurdler Gontse Morake, along with rising middle-distance stars Prudence Sekgodiso, Carmie Prinsloo and Nicole Louw.

The final SA team for the 2020 IAAF World U-20 Championships, to be held in Nairobi between 7-12 July, will be announced closer to the event.

“During the ASA General Council Meeting 12 days ago in Johannesburg, we made an undertaking to release the Preparation Squad before the end of the month. We have now achieved that. This will allow athletes and coaches time to put their plans in place.

“This is a full opportunity granted to selected athletes to accept with both hands for they are now the focus of a nation in the build-up to this championship.  Kenya has good memories to us because this is where we conquered the world title in the youth in 2017,” said Aleck Skhosana, the President of ASA.
