Tusker two good for Sofapaka as brewers climb up to second

• Tusker have now gone for seven matches without defeat
• The win takes them to second spot
• Sofapaka have won only once in seven matches

FKF Premier League defending champions Tusker FC continued with their ascendancy to the top of the standings after beating Sofapaka 2-0 to move to second spot. Ibrahim Joshua and substitute Eric Zakayo scored in the second half, to hand the brewers maximum points.

They moved to 33 points, four behind leaders Kakamega Homeboyz who will be playing later Saturday.

Captain Humphrey Mieno was elated with the victory and lauded the team for the effort, as they went for a seventh match without defeat.

“We had looked at what we were not doing right and worked on them. Right now the momentum has come in and everyone in the team is working. We just continue to push because we are not there yet,” Mieno said.

Tusker had not lost in six matches neither had they conceded and coming up against Batoto ba Mungu, they were keen to continue in the same run of form.

They sure had the chances from the start, but couldn’t find the target.

They had an early chance when Joshua intercepted a backpass at the edge of the box but his final shot was deflected wide. He also had a header from Jackson Macharia’s cross come off the upright after rising to head in at the backpost.

In between, Shami Kibwana had a golden chance when he sped off on the left to break into the box, but his attempt at beating keeper Kevin Omondi at his near post was not successful.

On the other end, Sofapaka had a chance after 22 minutes when a cutback from the left by Titus Achesa found Joe Waithira at the edge of the six yard box, but his first time shot was punched away by Tusker goalie Patrick Matasi.

The brewers quickly turned from defense to offense. John Njuguna had a brilliant opportunity to score when he was picked out unmarked from a Shami cross, but his left foot curler skied over the bar.

The home side started the second half faster off the blocks as they looked to get onto the scoresheet first. Lawrence Juma had a good chance when he was accorded shooting space from the edge of the box, but his well taken shot was tipped over by Matasi.

But Tusker took the cue and got more offensive. They were rewarded in the 62nd minute when a textbook counter on the right saw SHami Kibwana go off on his wheels before slicing a brilliant cross that was headed in by Ibrahim.

To have more command of the game, Tusker boss Robert Matano made changes, bringing in the experienced Humphrey Mieno and Kevin Okoth for Shaphan Oyugi and Macharia.

In the 71st minute, Shami came close to scoring a wonder goal when he struck a brilliant bicycle kick off a Joshua cross from the left, but his well hit effort came off the upright.

Tusker kept the hunt and were rewarded with virtually the last kick off the game when Zakayo who had just come on for Shami curled in a brilliant freekick from the edge of the box leaving keeper Omondi rooted to his spot.
