Tusker look to bounce back in Premier league defense

Tusker FC head coach Robert Matano

Tusker FC take on Talanta on Wednesday afternoon looking to bounce back from a poor run of results, the latest being the 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Zamalek SC in the CAF Champions League. The brewers continue their bid to defend the FKF Premier League title and a match against the league debutants will be a perfect platform for them to bounce back.

Tusker started their league campaign with a 1-0 loss against AFC Leopards in Thika and then followed up with home and away subsequent losses against Zamalek.

“We have picked very valuable lessons and we will look to be better coming back to the league. It is a tough match we are facing but the players are up to the task and we have to show that we are the champions with a good result,” said Tusker FC coach Robert Matano.

Playing at home against an unbeaten Talanta side, Tusker have their work cut out. Ken Kenyatta’s men have drawn two of their opening three games of the season against Wazito FC and KCB and also picked maximum points with a win against fellow newcomers Vihiga United.

An aspect that Tusker will look to improve heading into Wednesday afternoon’s game is their scoring. Since putting three past Djibouti’s Arta Solar 7, they have not put the ball in the back of the net from open play.

Their goal from the 1-1 draw with Gor in the Charity Cup was off a penalty spot while they fired blanks in both matches against Zamalek and against AFC Leopards.

Midfielder Jackson Macharia is hopeful that they can cure the bug of lack of goals.

“We know that we haven’t yet hit the peak of our performance but we can improve as we move forward. We come into this game from playing in the Champions League which is a very high level and I believe that if we can implement some things we learn, we will do well,” said Macharia.

He added; “Of course it has been a very difficult start to the season and we know we need to improve. We have picked up the challenge as players and are ready to do our best.”

Meanwhile, Gor Mahia will also be in action on Wednesday, taking on a tricky Kariobangi Sharks side. Gor have had a contrasting start to the season having won their Confederation Cup match against Al Ahli merowe before picking back to back league victories against KCB and arch rivals Gor Mahia.

They will be out to continue their perfect start against an impressive young Sharks side which has picked seven points from three matches. They have won against Vihiga United and Posta Rangers and also gone on to pick a point last weekend against Wazito FC.

Coach William Muluya expects a tough outing when the two sides clash at Kasarani, with Gor playing with their passionate fans for the first time in close to two years.

“It is always tough between us and Gor Mahia but as a team we are ready and we have prepared well. Everyone is focused and looking forward to getting the three points. We want to continue with the good start to the season,” Muluya said.
