The bright colours and enlarged details make the court look like a big rug when viewed from above. Still, all necessary game lines have been retained allowing fans to play as per basketball rules. At sunset, a visual icon emerges from the court into the Reem Central Park’s landscape, thanks to its vibrant colors. This is where every basketball fan should shoot hoops during the holidays.

Belgian visual artist Katrien Vanderlinden takes credit for the magnificent visual work done at the basketball court. Vanderlinden, who worked in Belgium and Germany before coming to Abu Dhabi, drew inspiration about the art from the local Emirati culture and the Boston Celtics visiting Abu Dhabi.

“This project perfectly embodies the collaboration of sports, culture, and art. You have the Boston Celtics alongside this traditional pattern from Abu Dhabi, combined with my artistic style. I think that is very beautiful… I love seeing the impact my art has on people.” Vanderlinden told Aletihad.

H.E. Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi and H.E. Saood Abdulaziz Al Hosani, Undersecretary of DCT Abu Dhabi were among the prominent figures who attended the grand unveiling of the court. Below are the names of the other top officials who were present during the inauguration:

  • H.E. Nouf Mohamed Al-Bushlaibi, Executive Director of the Strategic Marketing & Communications Sector at DCT Abu Dhabi
  • Rich Gotham, President of the Bolton Celtics
  • Ted Dalton Chief Partnership Officer
  • Chris Sparks, Senior Director of Youth Development

A Genius Way To Market The NBA Abu Dhabi Games 2024

The grand opening of Reem Central Park basketball court couldn’t have been done at a better time than during the NBA Abu Dhabi Games 2024. For a third consecutive year, preseason games were played in the Arabian Gulf, with the 2024 edition seeing the Boston Celtics (the reigning NBA champions) take on the Denver Nuggets (2023 champions) in a two-day action packed event.

The matches took place on October 4th and 5th at Etihad Arena, the same venue that hosted the 2022 and 2023 edition of the Abu Dhabi Games.

In addition to the two matches, there was plenty going on in the capital attracting thousands of visitors from different parts of the world. Among the festivities was NBA District – a four-day fan engagement event at the renowned Manarat Al Saadiyat gallery. The event allowed basketball fans to meet NBA icons such as Shaquille O’Neal and also take photos with the prestigious Larry O’Brien Trophy.

Conclusion

The makeover of Reem Central Park was not only aimed at showing the city’s love for art and marketing the highly anticipated NBA Abu Dhabi Games 2024 but also motivate the younger generation of athletes. The court will also brace the growing love for basketball across the whole of UAE.
