On Wednesday, Hwang Ui-jo made an appearance in a Seoul court to answer charges of illegally filming his sexual encounters with two women. The former Premier League striker filmed the victims without their consent on four occasions between June and September 2022.

The case got the attention of the public in mid 2023 when Hwang’s sister-in-law shared the videos on the internet while attempting to blackmail him. He sued her and she was sentenced to three years in prison, but landed in trouble when authorities found out that he filmed the videos illegally.

According to The Korea Times, prosecutors on Wednesday demanded a four-year prison sentence for Hwang Ui-jo for the crime he committed. The prosecution told court that the two women, who are Hwang’s partners, have been “under great pain and humiliation” since the videos were distributed online.

Standing before the court in Seoul, Hwang pleaded guilty to all the charges and apologized for his actions. The sentencing date for the 32-year-old will be later this year on 18 December.

“I will not do anything wrong in the future and will do my best as a footballer. I sincerely apologize to the victims who have been affected by my actions, and I am deeply sorry for the disappointment I have caused to all those who have cared and supported me. Hwang Ui-jo told Seoul Central District Court in Seocho District, Seoul, as per BBC Sport.

Hwang began his career as a professional footballer in 2013 at Seongnam FC. He then played for Gamba Osaka before moving overseas where he signed with Ligue 1 club Bordeaux.

In 2022, the South Korea international joined English side Nottingham Forest and was immediately loaned out to Greek club Olympiacos. He also had loan spells at FC Seoul and Norwich City before moving to Turkish side Alanyaspor on a permanent deal at the start of last month.

Elsewhere, Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe faces allegations of rape in a Stockholm hotel on 10 October. Two Swedish newspapers (Expressen, Aftonbladet), and public broadcaster SVT published reports linking Mbappe to the alleged rape that took place six days ago. Expressen said that the 25-year-old France international is “reasonably suspected” of rape and sexual assault, and that clothing had been seized by Swedish authorities as part of evidence.

Mbappe visited Scandinavia with some of his friends during the international break after being left out of France’s squad due to fitness concerns, and according to reports from Sweden, police visited the hotel where the group settled. Swedish prosecutors issued a statement confirming that investigations had started after a formal complaint was filed. As of now, the identity of the alleged victim has not been revealed.

Kylian Mbappe and his camp have reacted to the reports which have got the attention of many football fans on the internet, stating that they “have no knowledge of a legal complaint made against him”. The Frenchman is currently back to Spain after the short holiday and even trained with his Real Madrid teammates on Tuesday.

Mbappe, who is 25, joined the Los Blancos during the 2024 summer transfer window after a successful spell with Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).
