On Sunday, June 9, Carlos Alcaraz beat Alexander Zverev in a five-set thriller to lift the French Open 2024 title. Fans at Court Philippe-Chatrier were treated to one of the best matches of the tournament as both Alcaraz and Zverev battled it out for the crown before the former clinched an unforgettable 6-3 2-6 5-7 6-1 6-2 win.

Alcaraz has joined the list of Spaniards who have triumphed at Roland Garros, which includes Rafael Nadal, Juan Carlos Ferrero and Carlos Moya among others. At the age of 21, he is the youngest player to win the French Open since Nadal in 2007. The Spaniard is also the youngest player to win a Grand Slam on every surface, a record which was previously held by Nadal at 22.

Alcaraz claimed his first grand slam on the hard courts of the US Open back in 2022 and then went on to win on the grass of Wimbledon last year before his clay victory on Sunday at French Open 2024.

How Carlos Alcaraz Won French Open 2024

Carlos Alcaraz reached Sunday’s final after a hard-fought victory over Jannik Sinner, who is the current world number one. Even though the match against German fourth seed Alexander Zverev was not going to be an easy one, many believed that Alcaraz was going to win. The Spaniard was hoping to land his third Grand Slam title and achieve his childhood dream of winning the French Open while his opponent was targeting a first.

Playing in front of a lively crowd on Court Philippe-Chatrier, both players started slow and were not anywhere close to their best. Zverev made two double faults early on but found his way after uncertain hitting from his opponent.

When both players settled in the game, third seed Alcaraz took control and began soaking up the German’s powerful groundstrokes. He went on to pepper Zverev with drop shots and then sealed the set.

Despite taking a 2-1 lead in the second set, Alcaraz lost momentum while Zverev remained consistent and levelled the game before clinching the set.

Alcaraz showed his prowess in the third set, breaking to love early before taking a 5-2 lead. However, he struggled to cope with Zverev’s game and allowed the German to come from behind and win the set in dramatic fashion.

The French Open 2024 men’s final turned out to be one of the most entertaining matches as another twist came in the fourth set. Alcaraz started the set brilliantly and displayed excellent return game as he rushed to a 4-1 lead before needing medical attention on his left leg.

Alcaraz has struggled with injuries this year and had not played for a whole month before competing at the French Open due to pain on his right forearm. His last match was in Madrid Open where he reached the quarter-finals. He didn’t compete at the Italian Open.

After receiving treatment, Alcaraz went on to win the fourth set 6-1 and force a decider. Both players were under tension in the fifth set and it was the Spaniard who continued with his impressive run from the previous set to take a 3-1 lead. Despite Zverev trying to fight back, the world number three held on to his lead and secured a 6-2 victory to win French Open 2024 final.
