- Frenkie de Jong is a Dutch professional footballer
- He plays as a midfielder for Barcelona
- He is not interested in the three-year contract extension with Barcelona
Frenkie de Jong, Barcelona’s midfielder is hesitant to accept the club’s contract extension for three more years. The club has been negotiating with the player for quite some time without success.
De Jong first signed his contract with Barcelona in 2019, a deal that was to run for five years, till June 2024. However, in 2020, his contract was extended for two more years, running until June 2026.
The midfielder is hesitant to sign his contract extension with Barca because the deal wants him to accept a pay cut as part of the extension which he is not willing to take as he feels his performance warrants his current salary.
Currently, Barca is having financial constraints and this could be one of the reasons the player is hesitant about signing another deal with them. His contract still has two more years and this has some bargaining power. He might be on a spot to weigh if other clubs can offer him a more lucrative deal.

De Jong has not shown any interest in the upcoming deal and this could be because he wants his initial contract to end first, valid till June 2026, and for him, that’s the right time to discuss the upcoming deal.
There have been suggestions that the contract extension involves a pay cut as part of the deal and he might not be willing to take a lower salary because maybe his impressive performance warrants his current pay.
The club has also been under financial constraints recently and the player might be hesitant to commit his future to a club that is facing financial instability. However, he may give them time as he seeks a starting role in future.
In his initial contract, he has two more years with the club and with this, still holds some bargaining power with hesitation, he may be weighing on if other clubs could offer him a more lucrative deal.
Can Barcelona secure Frenkie De Jong’s future?
This question about the midfielder’s future at the club remains uncertain since he is a world-class player and as per Xavi, the club’s manager, keeping him would solidify their midfield in future.
On the other hand, the club is under financial constraints and by selling him, they could generate a significant amount of transfer fee that will help them in other areas of their development. The transfer is rumored to be about $126.9 million.
Since the player has not talked about signing the contract extension, we might also assume that he will eventually agree to the terms, a salary reduction to stay at the club, as he seeks a starting role.

Clubs eyeing Frenkie De Jong
His hesitation to a contract extension is a benefit for other clubs who have been interested in his services. He played at Ajax under Erik ten Hag who is the current manager of Manchester United and he seems interested in acquiring the midfielder. With Paul Pogba’s departure from Old Trafford, the 27-years-old might be a suitable fit for their midfield.
Paris Saint-Germain has also been mentioned in some reports that they are looking for an experienced midfielder. Weighing on their financial stability, this club might make a big offer for the player that will see Barca release him.
Apart from the highlighted clubs, there could also be interest from other Premier League clubs if he expresses a desire to leave Barcelona.
