Iga Swiatek has continued to show dominance in women’s tennis by winning the 2024 French Open final. The world number one beat Jasmine Paolini 6-2 6-1 in the final of Roland Garros played on Saturday to be crowned champion of the French tournament for a third consecutive time.
Swiatek, who is now dubbed the ‘Queen of Clay’, has recorded victories in 21 matches in a row at the French Open, which is the fourth-longest streak in the Open Era as far as women’s singles is concerned. Her last loss in Paris came in 2021 and she has claimed a total of four out of five French Open titles (2020, 2022, 2023, 2024).

The only other women to have claimed the French Open four times in the last 100 years are American great Helen Wills (1928, 1929, 1930, 1932) and Justine Henin (2003, 2005, 2006, 2007).
Speaking after her unforgettable win at the 2024 French Open on Saturday, Iga Swiatek spoke about her love for the clay tournament.
“It’s amazing to be here. I love this place. I wait every year to come back here. I was almost out of the tournament in the second round – it’s been a really emotional tournament.” Iga Swiatek is quoted by Sky Sports.
The 23-year-old is now just three wins away from equalling Chris Evert’s record of seven triumphs at the French Open. Fittingly, Evert handed the Suzanne Lenglen trophy to Swiatek alongside Martina Navratilova on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
How Iga Swiatek Won The 2024 French Open Final
World number one Iga Swiatek brushed aside Marie Bouzkova, Naomi Osaka, Anastasia Potapov, 2023 Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova and Coco Gauff before reaching this year’s French Open final. Whereas Jasmine Paolini was aiming for her first triumph at a Grand Slam final, Swiatek was on course to recording a third straight win at Roland Garros.
Swiatek was the favourite heading to the final but faced a tough challenge from Paolini in the early stages of their clash. Paolini took the lead in the third game and it seemed as if she was on course to producing another upset, having knocked out 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina earlier in the competition. However, Swiatek found rhythm and went on to take a 4-2 lead before closing the opener with a double-break.
The 23-year-old player from Poland showed no sign of slowing down in the second set as she continued to grow better while her opponent was left frustrated. Swiatek went on to claim the second set and win the 2024 French Open final in one hour and eight minutes.
Whereas Swiatek’s job at Roland Garros is done, Paolini will be returning to action again today as she will be playing in the women’s doubles final alongside her teammate Sara Errani.

This year’s men’s final will be played later today, Sunday, in Paris. Two-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz will be facing Alexander Zverev for a chance to triumph.
Alcaraz, 21, reached the final at Roland Garros for the first time after beating incoming world number one Jannik Sinner 2-6 6-3 3-6 6-4 6-3 in a thrilling semi-final on Friday. On the other hand, Zverev was also forced to come from behind to record a 2-6 6-2 6-4 6-2 win over Casper Ruud in another semi-final match played on Friday.
Carlos Alcaraz is now the youngest man to reach Grand Slam finals on grass, hard court and clay. If he triumphs on Sunday, he will join the list of Spaniards who have won the French Open which includes Sergi Bruguera, Carlos Moya, Albert Costa, Rafael Nadal and his current coach Juan Carlos Ferrero.
