Bayern Munich have announced Vincent Kompany as new head coach, replacing the departed Thomas Tuchel.

Kompany has left Burnley and it is understood that Bayern will pay a compensation fee of about £10.2 million for the move. The 38-year-old, who guided Burnley to Premier League promotion in 2023 after winning the EFL Championship, has signed a three-year contract. He now has the task of restoring a fallen giant to its former glories.

Bayern had a difficult 2023/24 season and decided to part ways with manager Tuchel earlier this year despite still being able to race with Bayern Leverkusen for the Bundesliga title. Tuchel remained as the Bavarians boss until the end of the season and was close to leading them to the final of this season’s UEFA Champions League but lost in the semi-finals to Real Madrid after conceding two late goals.

Bayern’s search for a new manager was well publicized, especially after missing out on prime target Xabi Alonso who decided to extend his stay at Bayer Leverkusen. The German giants approached former bosses Hansi Flick and Julian Nagelsmann who all turned down the job. Former Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick and three-time Champions League winner Zinedine Zidane also rejected the Bundesliga giants.

It was reported that Bayern’s board were also interested in former Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi, Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glanser and Manchester United current head coach Erik ten Hag.

Having missed out on all their initially preferred candidates for the job, Bayern ended up agreeing a deal with Vincent Kompany. The former Manchester City captain knew he was way down the list but couldn’t reject the European powerhouses who have dominated Bundesliga for more than a decade.

Bayern knew that Kompany had failed to keep Burnley in the Premier League but went for him because he fits well with the club’s playing philosophy, as per sporting director Christoph Freund.

“Vincent Kompany is a type of coach who fits in very well with FC Bayern’s playing philosophy and identity. He is a young, very ambitious coach who brings a lot of international experience, has his finger on the pulse of the players and knows exactly what should happen on the pitch.” BBC quotes Christoph Freund.

Kompany had a good reputation as manager at Anderlecht and when he joined Burnely. The only thing that is making his CV questionable is being relegated from the Premier League.

Hansi Flick Confirmed As Barcelona’s New Head Coach

Elsewhere, former Bayern Munich manager Hansi Flick got a new job as the head coach of FC Barcelona. Flick signed a two-year deal and has replaced Xavi Hernandez who was sacked by Joan Laporta one month after being persuaded to stay.

Xavi had announced earlier this year that he was going to leave Barca at the end of the season after a good number of fans lost faith in him. However, the club would later convince him to change his mind.

The former midfielder led Barcelona to a second place finish in La Liga and to the quarter-finals of the Champions League where they lost to French giants Paris Saint-Germain.

Hansi Flick now has the task of making Barca a club that can challenge Real Madrid for the La Liga considering the Catalans surrendered the title early in the concluded season. The 59-year-old last managed the Germany and was sacked in September after failing to lead the national team in the right direction.

During his time at Bayern Munich, Flick guided the club to triumph in the Bundesliga and Champions League, among other titles.
