- The left-back’s last match came on the final day of the 2022-23 season as Manchester United beat Fulham 2-1
- Malacia’s absence has left Erik ten Hag with no options on the left-back position since Luke Shaw is struggling with injuries
The 2023-24 season is almost coming to an end but we haven’t seen Tyrell Malacia play even a single match. At first, fans were asking questions about his whereabouts but as Manchester United crushed out of the UEFA Champions League and continued to struggle in the league, Erik ten Hag and his remaining men took all the attention. But for the few who are still thinking about the Dutch youngster who arrived at Old Trafford in the summer of 2022, you just came to the right place as we have the info you need.
What Happened to Malacia?

To start with, Tyrell Malacia has not been on the pitch since Manchester United beat Fulham 2-1 in the final match of last season. The 24-year-old was an unused substitute during the FA Cup final between United and Manchester City at Wembley a few days. That happened to be the last time that Malacia was included in United’s matchday squad.
Malacia did not play ion the Red Devils pre-season friendlies last year that included matches against Borussia Dortmund, Wrexham, RC Lens and Lyon.
The Dutch was not included in the team that played United’s first match of the 2023-24 season against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Eyebrows were raised as weeks went by and he was still nowhere to be seen. The last time he posted on X, formerly Twitter, was on July 15, 2023 where he ‘proved’ himself joining pre-season training. As already mentioned, he never played a single minute in pre-season.
Where is Tyrell Malacia?
Tyrell Malacia is reportedly in a really “complicated” situation at Manchester United. According to football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Malacia is struggling but United will shed light on the matter soon.
“It’s a really complicated moment for the boy. He’s really struggling. I think Manchester United will make some clarity in the next weeks or months to clarify what’s happening.” Fabrizio Romano told The United Stand on YouTube, as per Goal.com. The website states that Malacia’s is not only struggling with an injury but also mental wellbeing.
According to his Wikipedia page, Tyrell Malacia is missing because he underwent a knee injury last summer that has kept him away from the screens for eleven months now. United had released a statement on his injury update in December and said he will be back at the start of this year. However, it’s now May and the left-back is still nowhere to be seen.
At this point, it seems very unlikely that Malacia will play this campaign. If he is to get back to action in the next few weeks then the earliest we can seem him playing is during Manchester United’s 2024 pre-season tour.
Tyrell Malacia absence has left Manchester United with no options on the left-back position as Luke Shaw has also been struggling with an injury for the majority of this season. Man Utd are going to have a busy summer and it was earlier reported that if Malacia’s situation remains the same then the club will have to sign a new left-back.

Injuries Playing A Role In Man Utd’s Nightmare Campaign
The Red Devils difficult campaign can be attributed to injuries to the team. Apart from Malacia and Shaw, Casemiro, Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, Mason Mount and Anthony Martial have been on the sidelines for several weeks.
Lisandro Martinez has suffered many injury setbacks that have limited him to just ten matches this campaign. On the other hand, Mount has made 12 appearances.
The latest player to be injured at Old Trafford is Scott McTominay, who has scored crucial goals for Manchester United this season. The midfielder was forced off late on during their 1-1 draw against Burnley at Old Trafford over the weekend.
The injury-prone players at Manchester United have played a few games this campaign, unlike Tyrell Malacia who we doubt if he will get a single minute before the season ends.
