- Reux will be leaving Dortmund this summer after 12 years at the club
- He played as an attacking midfielder and was the team’s captain
- He rejected big offers for the loyalty of the club
Borussia Dortmund winger Marco Reux departs from the club after 12 years of loyalty. His unwavering dedication is evident from the offers he rejected from bigger clubs to stay with his boyhood team.
His fans have greatly supported his loyalty, earning respect and he was appointed as the team’s captain for some time. He left for Borussia Monchengladbach for three seasons and established himself in the Bundesliga.
He returned to Borussia Dortmund where he became a key player and won several trophies. However, his career was faced by challenges of multiple injuries but that did not deter his dream of becoming a loyal player for the club.
Reux career journey
His career journey started at Borussia Dortmund youth academy and due to a desire for more playing time, he moved to Borussia Monchengladbach where he played for three years, establishing himself in the Bundesliga.

He returned to Borussia Dortmund in 2012, which was a turning point for him and the club. At the club, he became a key player and his dedication to the club made him a fan favourite. During this time, he got several offers from bigger clubs but rejected them.
His dedication saw him become a captain of the team for a period and during this time, he helped them win the DFB-Pokal twice and the DFL-Supercup three times. He has been a key player for Dortmund for over 12 years.
Unfortunately, his career was marked with injuries but these did not deter his success. Internationally, he has played for the German national team and due to injuries, he never participated in some major tournaments he was called up for.
Some of the opportunities he missed include:
- The 2014 World Cup victory
- Euro 2016
- Euro 2020
- The 2022 World Cup
However, he also participated in a few tournaments including the Euro 2012 and the 2018 World Cup.
Reux Loyalty to Dortmund
Growing up in Dortmund and starting his youth career at the club, he was so attached making it more than just a workplace but home. After his youth training, he left for Borussia Monchengladbach where he was looking for more playing time eventually returning to Dortmund even after establishing himself at the club.
His return to Dortmund was warmly welcomed by the fans and teammates as his play style resonated with the Dortmund faithful. He has been the symbol of their passion and this likely encouraged him to stay and contribute more to their success.
He became a key player for Dortmund, winning multiple trophies and this environment of achieving success with the club he loves might have been a strong motivator for him to stay. While he received lucrative offers from other bigger clubs, Dortmund also offered a significant amount that he was comfortable with and thus, there was no need for moving to other clubs since he was well paid with a conducive environment to play.
Having trained in their academy, he is conversant with their style of play and this would have maybe felt less comfortable adapting to a different skill set elsewhere.
Reux departure at Dortmund
After 12 years of loyalty, the 34 year old is now set to depart from the club this summer after 428 appearances during his tenure. The decision to leave is however not clear but can be based on several factors.
At his age, he could be seeking a new challenge or prioritizing play time. The club on the other hand might be looking to invest in younger talent and had a mutual agreement on this decision of his departure.

He also had a challenging part of his career due to hampering injuries and this could lead to his decision of seeking for a new challenge elsewhere where he can secure a starting role and regular playing time.
Dortmund impact on Reux departure
Having played for the club for 12 years, he has enough experience on how to guide the young players and setting the time for the team, finding a suitable replacement that will take up the task will be crucial.
He has contributed significantly to Dortmund’s success by being a prolific scorer and replacing his contributions might be a major challenge before they settle on the right person for that. He had a good fan base and his departure could affect the morale of his fans.
