For Premier League players, it just doesn’t work out occasionally in their never-ending quest to get better every season.

We’ve looked Premier League players who have declined in 2023–2024, ranging from aging superstars to rookie players who have stagnated following an impressive debut.

Evan Ferguson was reportedly linked to a £100 million transfer to one of the Premier League’s major players last summer.

The Ireland international had made a big impression at Brighton, and a hat-trick against Newcastle early in the season only served to further his rising stature. Ferguson had an incredible year, surpassing Wayne Rooney’s record for the most goals scored by a youngster in the Premier League in a single calendar year and becoming only the fourth player in the league under the age of eighteen to score a triple.

But since then, there has been a noticeable drop. Ferguson finished the year with just six goals in 36 appearances—none since November—after a foot injury derailed his campaign. The price tag has decreased, but the transfer discussion hasn’t completely vanished.

Miguel Almiron

For the first time in twenty years, Newcastle qualified for the Champions League thanks in part to Miguel Almiron’s stellar play in the previous year.

More goals were scored by the Paraguay midfielder for the Magpies in the league than he had in his three and a half seasons combined at St. James’ Park, with 11 goals. Almiron has shown glimpses of brilliance this season, like as his Champions League game-winning effort against Paris Saint-Germain, but the finished product has once again been lacking.

It is probable that he will leave Newcastle given their desire to sell before making any summer investments.

Casemiro

Because of his awful performance in Manchester United‘s 4-0 loss against Crystal Palace this week, Casemiro has been unable to stay out of the news.

The five-time Champions League champion was moving slowly and drew criticism from Sky Sports’ Jamie Carragher, who advised the midfielder to “call it a day” at the highest level.

Carragher stated to Sky Sports, “I believe Casemiro should be aware tonight that he should only have three more games remaining at the highest level.”

For the majority of 2023–24, Casemiro has not looked like the player he once was, after making a significant impression upon his arrival from Real Madrid previous season. A player who can no longer cover ground as well as he once could has not benefited from Erik ten Hag’s approach, and his recent out-of-position performances have further highlighted the limitations of aging. For Manchester United, it is a dilemma on a lucrative long-term agreement.

Gabriel Jesus

Arsenal’s transition from top-four challengers to legitimate championships contenders had been predicted last season with Gabriel Jesus’s acquisition from Manchester City. The Brazilian has never been a big player, but he excels in a lot of other things.

But, it hasn’t worked for Jesus in this season or with injuries. In 25 games, he has only scored four goals in the league, and he has watched while Kai Havertz has become an Arsenal legend. It’s been a serious downturn for Jesus, from failing to halt cries for an obvious goal scorer to come to the Emirates to losing his spot to a player who is maybe even less of a “proper” forward than he is.

As a result, he was left off of Brazil’s Copa America selection.

Marcus Rashford

Not just Casemiro of Manchester United has had difficulties this year. Positive performances have really been the uncommon. Another player whose season has drastically declined is Marcus Rashford, a 26-year-old who made history last season by being the first player in ten years to score thirty goals in a single campaign for the team.

With the exception of 2021–2022, Rashford’s eight goals in all competitions are the joint-lowest of his career. This is concerning because it comes after a career-best season, indicating that his form is too inconsistent to be taken seriously as a top player.

His inconsistent play may yet result in his exclusion from Euro 2024. It’s difficult to argue against him given his form.
