Saturday’s massive victory will play a significant role in boosting their morale as they aim to win Europe’s top prestigious competition.

How Borussia Dortmund Beat Darmstadt

Both Borussia Dortmund and Darmstadt didn’t have much to fight for on Saturday as they played their final matches of the season. Dortmund were already destined to finish fifth on the Bundesliga standings whether they won or lost the match. On the other hand, Darmstadt, had already been relegated as they were last on the table with just 17 points won throughout the campaign.

As expected, Dortmund who were the hosts dominated the match from the start and almost found the back of the net in the early stages. Darmstadt somehow managed to contain Dortmund until the half hour mark when they conceded the first goal.

Marco Reus fed Ian Maatsen with a decent ball and the on-loan player made no mistake in front of goal as he drilled a low shot into the bottom corner. It didn’t take long before the hosts increased their lead, this time Reus being the goalscorer.

Dortmund’s legendary midfielder scored a spectacular free kick from the edge of the box to give his side a 2-0 advantage heading to the break.

Edin Terzic’s side continued to dominate the proceedings after the restart but had to wait until the 72nd minute before finding another goal. Jadon Sancho picked out substitute Julian Brandt in the box and the 28-year-old curled a shot inside the post to put his side 3-0 up.

The Signal Iduna Park rose to applaud Reus in the 80th minute as he was replaced by Felix Nmecha. Donyell Malen got the work done for Dortmund with two minutes left to play as he pounced on a loose ball in the danger zone to score Dortmund’s fourth goal of the match.

Marco Reus Gets An Incredible Send-off

Reus announced at the start of this month that he will be parting ways with Borussia Dortmund after 12 years at the club. The German was close to breaking down as walked off the pitch after being substituted.

Dortmund players formed a guard of honour for Reus and everyone at Signal Iduna Park clapped as he made his way to the tunnel.

The 34-year-old joined Dortmund in 2012 and leaves after winning the DFB-Pokal twice and the DFL-Supercup once. He was part of the club’s squad that finished as runner-up during the 2012-13 UEFA Champions League campaign and will be hoping to win the prestigious title a few weeks from now when Dortmund play in the final at Wembley Stadium.

Reus has so far played 420 games as a Dortmund player and has been a key player for the club over the years. Even though he leaves without winning the Bundesliga title, the German midfielder won the league’s Player of the Year thrice.

Reus will not retire after his Dortmund departure as he said he is looking forward to continue playing.

“I want to play on because I feel good and believe in myself, but first the Champions League final is in focus.” Marco Reus is quoted by newsday.com.
