- With the introduction of VAR in football, it’s nowadays almost impossible to get away with a goal scored when offside
- We’ve seen the VAR intervene several times and cut short celebrations when there was a goal scored from an offside position
- Darwin Nunez is the player who has been caught offside the most in the 2023/2024 Premier League season so far
The availability of technology and stats in modern football has made it easy to even identify the most offside players this season. With the introduction of VAR in football, it’s nowadays almost impossible to get away with a goal scored when offside. We have seen goals overturned several times because of the goalscorer being in an offside position or a teammate was caught offside in the build-up.
Today, we have decided to take a look at the most offside players this season in the English Premier League. From Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez to Dominic Calvert-Lewin, here are the players most prone to being caught offside.
1. Darwin Nunez (Liverpool) – 25

Well, if you have been watching Liverpool matches then you won’t be surprised to find out that Darwin Nunez is the player who has been caught offside the most in the 2023/2024 Premier League season so far. Unfortunately, the Uruguayan has raced in the final third 25 times when offside.
Even though he is one of the top strikers in the world, he could be more dangerous if he finally learns to master his runs. Nunez has find the back of the net eleven times in the Premier League this season.
2. Nicolas Jackson (Chelsea) – 23
Nicolas Jackson has been a regular starter at Chelsea since his arrival from Villareal last summer. The Senegal international has scored ten goals but to be honest, he would have been higher on the list of top scorers if he wasn’t caught offside 23 times. This is a huge number and a blow to Mauricio Pochettino who is trying to make the Blues a team competing for titles.
3. Jarrod Bowen (West Ham) – 20
West Ham forward Jarrod Bowen is having the season of his life. The 27-year-old has bagged 15 goals so far but just like the others on this list of the most offside players this season in the Premier League, his tally would be higher. He has raced into the final third when in an offside position a shocking 20 times.
4. Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Everton) – 19

We can all agree that Dominic Calvert-Lewin is one of the top strikers in the world if he’s fully fit. In fact, that England international could be among the top goalscorers in the Premier League this season. But his struggles with injuries over the past few seasons has led to lack of form which has seen him find the back of the net just five times. Besides that, Calvert-Lewin has also sneaked into the illegal position 19 times, which makes him rank among the most offside players this season.
5. Yoane Wissa (Brentford) – 18
Yoane Wissa grabbed a brace on Saturday as Brentford thumped Luton Town 5-1 at Kenilworth Road. This took his tally in the Premier League to ten goals. To many fans, Wissa and his teammate Bryan Mbeumo really stepped up at the start of this season in the absence of Ivan Toney who missed the first part of the season because of a betting ban. However, the DR Congo international could have scored more goals if he was not caught offside 18 times.
6. Anthony Elanga (Nottingham Forest) – 18
Nottingham Forest suffered a blow last month when they were deducted four points for spending too much. This placed them in the relegation zone and they have to fight hard to ensure they remain in the top division at the end of the season. So, one of their top stars ranking among the most offside players this season is far from ideal. Anthony Elanga, who joined the club from Manchester United, has been caught offside 18 times.

7. Jean-Philippe Mateta (Crystal Palace) – 18
Just like Wissa and Elanga, Jean Philippe Mateta has been caught racing into the opponent’s third when in an offside position a total of 18 times. Crystal Palace has had a tough 2023-24 season and Mateta failing to control his pace when the team is attacking has made things even more difficult for them because they’ve missed many goalscoring opportunities.
Mateta has scored nine Premier League goals this season, including a brace against West Ham on Sunday, April 21.
