Casper Ruud beat Novak Djokovic in the Monte Carlo Masters to cut short his run for the finals.

The teenage Norwegian sensation Ruud upset the seemingly unbeatable Djokovic in a thrilling three-set semi-final (6-4, 1-6, 6-4) by defying all odds.

Djokovic had hopes of winning the clay court season under his new coach Nenad Zimonjic.

How Did Casper Ruud Beat Novak Djokovic?

Renowned for his consistency and talent at the baseline, Ruud had an intimidating record against Djokovic coming into the match. He’d never even won a set against the 24-time Grand Slam champion, never mind a match.

However, it seemed like Djokovic was the only one making an effort.  As he pursued a record-tying fourth Monte Carlo victory in 2024, the world No. 1 was the overwhelming favourite due to his nearly perfect form.

Ruud’s first set was a masterclass in restrained intensity. His explosive forehand was always on point, controlling rallies and putting Djokovic on the defensive. Ruud took the lead after a pivotal early break, and he shocked the audience by closing out the set 6-4.

But Djokovic was not about to give up easily. In sharp contrast was the second set. Ruud, who is typically prone to mistakes, gave in to Djokovic’s unrelenting baseline pressure.

The Serb settled into a rhythm, taking advantage of Ruud’s sporadic attention span slips.  The match returned to routine as Djokovic easily won the set 6-1.

The decisive set turned into a test of fortitude and nerves.  From the baseline, both players exchanged blows, with Djokovic appearing to be getting closer to winning. But Ruud would not wither.

He summoned the partisan crowd’s spirit and dug deep for an extra gear. His bold strategy paid off as he broke Djokovic’s serve at a pivotal moment to take a 5-4 lead.

Ruud, who was serving for the match, showed steely grit by saving a match point and winning with a forceful backhand on his third try.

What Did Novak Djokovic Say After Losing to Casper Ruud?

He said that not winning a title yet in the 2024 season makes it a hard season not comparable to the last 15 years.

“Not having a title is, compared to the last 15 years, not a great season at all. There are positives to take away for sure, but I’m used to a really high standard in terms of expectations and results,” he said.

It was evident that Ruud was ecstatic. Not only had he achieved his greatest career victory, but he had also made history by becoming the first player from Norway to beat a player ranked number 1.

Beyond the confines of the court, the triumph symbolized the emergence of a new generation of clay. Ruud’s victory is noteworthy for a number of reasons. First of all, it shows a weakness in Djokovic’s armour that seemed unbreakable.

His aura of invincibility on clay courts seems to be waning, despite his continued dominance on hard courts.  It also represents Ruud’s emerging talent.

On clay, he has continuously progressed, making it to the French Open final the previous year.  This victory over Djokovic might serve as the impetus for him to eventually win a Grand Slam.

With an 11-4 record this year, Djokovic also suffered a loss in January’s United Cup quarterfinals while representing Serbia.

His goal at the French Open next month is to capture a record-tying 25th Grand Slam championship.

He double-failed on Ruud’s match point in the Monte Carlo match, confirming the outcome and capping an intense session of tennis.
