Simona Halep will play at the Miami Open after getting a wildcard to the WTA Masters 1000 event in Florida.
This will be her first tennis match in 15 months which she was away fighting for her tennis career after a four-year tennis ban.
Simona Halep Will Play at Miami Open 2024
Miami Open CEO James Blake handed Halep a wildcard to play at the event together with Venus Williams, Caroline Wozniacki and Emma Raducanu.
The tournament begins on March 17 through to March 31. Halep’s tennis future hung in the balance for a long time after the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) tribunal banned her for four years over doping.
In its ruling, the ITIA declared that the former world No. 1 one was unable failed to persuade the tribunal that she had inadvertently taken Roxadustat, a drug that is prohibited for use by athletes.
Trouble started during the 2022 US Open when the Romanian tested positive for roxadustat. This drug is used in the treatment of anaemia because it boosts the synthesis of haemoglobin and red blood cells.
For this, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) prohibits it because of the effect it has on an athlete’s body.

How Did Simona Halep Return to Tennis After Doping Ban?
She appealed the ban at the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland. She defended herself against these accusations for three days between February 7 and February 9.
A week later, the three-judge bench issued a verdict on the case saying that she is free to return to tennis immediately.
According to its ruling, Halep was not the only one responsible for her adverse drug test result at the 2022 U.S. Open. It said she was deserving of a chance to play again after more than a year away from the WTA Tour.
Regarding her drug penalty, the two-time Grand Slam champion is relieved and satisfied that she was cleared of any deliberate misconduct.
She is happy that she has received justice, since she couldn’t get it from the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) tribunal in the previous year.
Three CAS judges determined that Halep’s positive test result for a prohibited blood-boosting drug was likely the result of a tainted supplement rather than an intended drug.
The CAS judges lowered her four-year doping ban to just nine months, which ended in July of last year when it became retroactive.
In a case that could have ended her career, she is short of words in describing the overturning of ITIA’s ruling in its entirety.

“I cannot wait to return to the tour,” she stated. The 31-year-old Romanian tennis star had earlier expressed her confidence in the appeal process.
“My confidence in the prevalence of the truth remains intact. I look forward to reclaiming my place on the tennis courts,” she told the press outside CAS headquarters on February 9.
She reiterated her wish for forgiveness on her Instagram page one week before to the CAS’s decision in the case. Halep referred to the past as a “nightmare” since she had to refute allegations of events she was unaware of.
She wrote: “The nightmare that I have lived for a year and half has finished. I had the chance to present my defence in front of TAS, to show that I never did any kind of doping.
Why is Simona Halep Suing Canadian Company?
Halep is instituting legal action against Quantan Nutrition, a Canadian company that made a nutritional supplement that led to a four-year doping prohibition.
The $10 million lawsuit that the Romanian tennis player is pursuing is directed towards Quantum Nutrition, a company that does business as Schinoussa Superfoods.
The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) states that Halep’s positive roxadustat test resulted in a multi-million dollar lawsuit at the US Open in 2022.
