  • Phil Foden scored a brace as Manchester City beat Manchester United 3-1 on Sunday
  • This was the first time that City had ever come from behind to beat the Red Devils in a Premier League match

On Sunday, March 4th, Manchester City fought back to beat Manchester United 3-1 during the Man City vs Man United match. This was the first time that City had ever come from behind to beat the Red Devils in a Premier League match. They had lost the last 15 times in a row that they had trailed before Sunday.

Manchester United had taken the lead barely eight minutes into the match, thanks to Marcus Rashford’s sensational strike from 30 yards. City dominated the encounter afterwards and their efforts paid off in the second half when they scored three goals to win the derby.

Phil Foden equalized for the hosts in the 56th minute before completing the turnaround in the 80th minute. Erling Haaland, who had missed a golden opportunity in the first half, then sealed the win for Pep Guardiola’s side in stoppage time.

Speaking after the Manchester derby, Pep Guardiola was full of praise for Foden and even named him as the best player in the Premier League right now.

“It is the amount of games he is playing. He was always a talented player but now he is more mature and understands more the game, especially defensively. He can play middle, right, make moments and cut inside, play in the left, scoring from the left. What can I say? He is the best player in the Premier League right now for the amount of things he does. Unbelievable.” Pep Guardiola is quoted by BBC Sport.

Foden has scored 18 goals in all competitions for Manchester City this season, his most ever in a single campaign, surpassing his record of 16 he scored during the 2020-21 season.

How The Man City Vs Man United Game Unfolded

Manchester United had conceded ten goals against City in their last two trips to Etihad Stadium, and it looked like they were going to experience another long afternoon at Etihad Stadium on Sunday. Kevin De Bruyne found John Stones in the box with a dangerous pass but Casemiro was just at the right place to stop the England international from firing in the opener.

On the other end, Manchester United converted their first big chance of the match to take the lead inside eight minutes. Bruno Fernandes excellently controlled a long ball from Andre Onana and then set up Marcus Rashford, who fired  thunderous strike that hit the underside of the crossbar. It was the 26-year-old’s sixth goal of the Manchester derby.

Despite taking the lead, Manchester United struggled to even hold the ball and were totally dominated by their rivals. Onana, who has been facing criticism was the Red Devils’ star at the back, making crucial saves to deny the hosts.

City’s biggest chance of the first half fell to Haaland, but the Norwegian forward, who scored five against Luton Town on Tuesday, somehow missed an empty net after being found by Foden.

Shortly after the restart, City found the equalizer through Foden who had been set up by Rodri. Erik ten Hag protested the goal because it seemed Kyle Walker had fouled Rashford before winning the ball and starting the move that led to the equalizer.

With ten minutes left to play in the Man City vs Man United game, Foden gave the hosts the lead after a neat interchange with Julian Alvarez. Erling Haaland then sealed the win for the hosts in added time after a defensive error that led to him being left with only Onana to beat.

It was Manchester City’s sixth win in seven meetings against Manchester United. Pep Guardiola’s side are now just one point behind leaders Liverpool. Meanwhile, United have remained sixth on the table.
