On Saturday, March 9, Bayern Munich ran riot and thrashed Mainz 05 8-1 in the Bundesliga during the Bayern vs Mainz fixture.

Harry Kane, who has been in a dazzling form since joining Bayern last summer, scored a hat-trick to break two Bundesliga records. The England captain opened the scoring for the hosts in the 13 minute and followed it up with his second shortly before the halftime break and completed the treble in the 71st minute.

Kane is the first player to score four hat-tricks in a debut Bundesliga season and also the first player to score at least two goals in eight matches during his debut season in the German top flight. The previous best for a maiden campaign in the Bundesliga was seven games, which was set by Friedhelm Konietzka during the 1963-64 season and later levelled by Toni Polster during the 1993-94 season.

Also, Kane’s 30 league goals so far has equalized Uwe Seeler’s record for most goals in a debut Bundesliga campaign. The 30-year-old has now scored 36 goals across all competitions for Bayern in 34 games.

With several games still left to play in the Bundesliga and the UEFA Champions League, Kane is on track to make this the best scoring season in his entire career. He scored the most goals in a season during the 2017-18 campaign when he recorded 41 goals in 48 matches while playing for Tottenham Hotspur.

How The Bayern Vs Mainz Game Unfolded

Knowing very well they had to win Saturday’s match to reduce the 10-point gap against Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich started the game on a high note and went in front early on. Thomas Muller’s cross into the box was latched onto by Jamal Musiala, who set up Harry Kane for a tap in after the visitors goalkeeper Robin Zentner had been tempted to get off his line.

Bayern increased their lead in the 20th minute through Leon Goreztka, who slotted the rebound home after Kane’s effort dropped off left post.

Things were going from bad to worse for Mainz when the referee pointed to the spot, but they got lucky after a VAR review ruled out the penalty. The visitors then surprisingly pulled one back shortly afterwards through Nadiem Amiri who struck into the top corner from a free kick 25 metres away.

Kane restored his side’s two-goal lead in first half’s stoppage time with a wonderful first touch before finishing low past Robin Zentner.

Bayern picked up from where they had left shortly after the restart as Thomas Muller tapped home Musiala’s good build-up work to make it 4-1. Kane then produced an incredible assist for Musiala to score his first goal of the match in the 61st minute.

Substitute Serge Gnabry then scored an amazing goal by pulling off an audacious mid-air backheel flick, with the ball going through the goalkeeper’s legs. Kane then completed his hat-trick in the 70th minute to make it 7-1 before Leon Goretzka added Bayern’s eighth goal of the match in stoppage time.

Speaking after the Bayern vs Mainz match, Bayern’s manager Thomas Tuchel said his side were very satisfied by the result.

“Mainz played very well in the first half. We didn’t lose our heads and trusted in our strengths. We took advantage of many chances and scored. We are therefore very satisfied with the result.” Thomas Tuchel said.

Bayern Munich’s commanding win against Mainz gives them hope of catching up with Bayer Leverkusen as they are now seven points behind the league leaders.
