Billy Donovan is an American professional basketball coach and former player who is currently the head coach for the Chicago Bulls of the National Basketball Association, and who previously served as the head coach at the University of Florida for nineteen years.
During his tenure with the University of Florida, he led his teams to two NCAA championships and an NCAA championship appearance. After leaving the University of Florida, he took over as the coach of the Oklahoma City Thunder for five seasons.
His love for basketball started when he was still young, he excelled in the sport and also in baseball. He turned down a baseball offer from the New York Yankees to play basketball at Providence College.
Donovan was drafted by the Utah Jazz in the 1987 NBA draft but his career was brief due to injuries, playing 44 games across the NBA and CBA. He was so passionate about coaching and took the opportunity immediately after his playing career.
His beginning position was as a graduate assistant under legendary coach Rick Pitino at the University of Kentucky, who climbed the ranks to an assistant and then an associate head coach. His big break was being hired as the head coach at the University of Florida.
Since then, he has coached several teams including the Oklahoma City Thunder and is currently the head coach of the Chicago Bulls.
Billy Donovan’s Personal Life
Billy was born and raised in Rockville Center, New York, to Donovan Sr. who was a talented basketball player at Boston College His father played professionally in Europe and briefly coached Billy’s youth teams.

His father was a big influence in his life choosing basketball over baseball. He played at the Providence College and was drafted into the NBA in 1987 though his playing career was brief due to injuries, and this saw him transition to a coach.
He met his wife Christine during his college years and they have been married since 1989, with fur children. His son William played for his father’s team in Florida. The couple had a stillbirth of their daughter Jacqueline in 2000, a tragedy that inspired them to become involved in several children’s charities.
Beyond the headlines, the coach is an avid golfer and fisherman who enjoys doing it with family and close friends. He is a devout Catholic who regularly attends church services.
