Hamilton will end his contract with Mercedes in 2025 and Ferrari is strategizing early on how to get him on their side.

With Mercedes, the British driver agreed to a two-year contract extension with Mercedes allowing him to leave at the end of the 2025 Formula One season.

Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur is focused on making Ferrari the next big team by onboarding Hamilton and extending Leclerc’s contract ahead of the 2024 season.

Hamilton was previously approached by John Elkann about joining Ferrari but the Mercedes driver graciously declined the offer.

According to fresh details by Formu1a.uno, Vasseur said that he talks with Hamilton weekly.

“I talk to Lewis every week, but if I had to hire him, I would have to assume every time,” he said. This according to F1 pundits is what is fuelling the rumours that Ferrari is all out in signing Hamilton in 2025.

Inside Ferrari’s Pursuit to Sign Lewis Hamilton in 2025

This is not the first time that Ferrari has hit the headline in its bid to sign Hamilton. Talks about this first emerged in 2023 when the team reportedly offered $49 (£40 million) million to sign him.

Hamilton was at the time in limbo since his contract with Mercedes was expiring at the end of the 2023 season. The biggest confusion surrounding his stay with Mercedes was in his contract renewal.

But Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff finally fleshed out the details of Hamilton’s contract extension. The British driver under the new contract with Mercedes gets a base pay of $55 million (£43.5 million) every year according to Forbes.

In addition, his contract is entirely guaranteed and comes with no bonuses. Doubling back to Ferrari’s $49 million offer; the Italian team tried to upscale its offer to sign him but the deal hit a snag.

Ferrari was looking at pairing Hamilton with Leclerc for the 2024 season and also pairing the 38-year-old Mercedes driver with Carlos Sainz.

There were reports that Mercedes was in talks with Leclerc whose contract expired at the end of the 2023 season.

This meant that if he agreed to leave the Italian team for the German racers, Hamilton would effectively take his place at Ferrari with teammate Sainz.

Hamilton dismissed claims of the poaching by Ferrari insisting that his focus was solely on Mercedes.

He said that his prize of winning an eighth championship title lay with Mercedes and not any other team.

Speaking on the sidelines of the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix, Hamilton asserted that he would sign a new contract with Mercedes despite the problems with his W14 car.

Hamilton stated that he is confident with Mercedes and the team behind it.

“My personal team are working closely behind the scenes with Toto and we are almost at the end of having a contract ready,” he told Mail Sport.

“Having a team to focus on that job is a much better position than I was in before. I used to do it all on my own and it was very stressful and I don’t have to do that anymore,” he added.
