Manchester United defeated Nottingham Forest 1-0 to secure their place in the FA Cup quarterfinals thanks to a late goal from Casemiro.

The match in the fifth round appeared to be going into extra time until Casemiro’s header in the 89th minute advanced the 20-time English winners to the last eight, where they will play Liverpool at Old Trafford.

In the fourth minute, Man United nearly found the breakthrough as Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho combined to create a well-worked corner. However, the Brazil international’s strong shot struck the crossbar, giving the home team a let-off.

When Diogo Dalot put a cross into McTominay’s head in the seventh minute, the visitors had another excellent opportunity, but the Scotland player headed straight at Turner from within the box.

On the opposite end, Origi’s speed had separated him from Amrabat, who was occupying the left-back position, and Man United goalkeeper Andre Onana had to react to block the strike.

After that, Taiwo Awoniyi had two consecutive opportunities, but Victor Lindelof stopped both of them, allowing Forest to start finding space in the latter third of the pitch.

In the seventeenth minute, Marcus Rashford struck over the Forest crossbar, and Onana then made a brilliant save to stop an attempt by Awoniyi.

Both teams had opportunities in the latter part of the field as Origi attempted his luck once again in the 29th minute, sending the ball over the crossbar.

Leading into the last minutes of the first half, the two teams were level. In the 33rd minute, McTominay had another header opportunity following a great cross from Dalot, but Turner denied the Scotland international once more. Neco Williams then hit the crossbar with a rasping effort down the other end.

After Casemiro missed the mark after a deft ball from the visiting team, Awoniyi missed the Man United goal in the last moments of the first half.

In the first minute of the second half, Onana made a great save to save an effort from Awoniyi, which kept United in the game. In the 51st minute, Man United’s keeper had to make another save to stop Origi from smashing one into the goal.

When Rashford went down inside the area after being challenged by Murillo, Man United’s penalty claim was denied. Turner then produced a great save to deny a shot from Antony in the 58th minute.

With a clever effort, Fernandes hit the crossbar for Forest in the sixty-third minute. Three minutes later, his teammate McTominay blocked another attempt by the Portugal international, but this time it went beyond the home team’s post.

In the 72nd minute, with Man United controlling the game and the Red Devils beginning to settle into a passing rhythm in the last third of the pitch, Turner denied Fernandes.

In the 76th minute, Amad Diallo had a good chance at the far post after Garnacho’s attempt deflected nicely for him. However, the Ivorian was unable to take advantage of the opportunity, and Onana then did a good job of stopping a long-range effort from Murillo at the other end.

In the 82nd minute, with extra time approaching at the City Ground, Rashford struck wildly wide of the Forest goal, and two minutes later, Casemiro narrowly missed the mark.

However, Man United took the lead in the 89th minute of play when Casemiro headed a Fernandes free-kick into the goal from close range.

After a protracted VAR review for offsides on Raphael Varane and Casemiro, the call was ultimately overturned, and Erik ten Hag’s team secured their place in the FA Cup quarterfinals, where they will face Liverpool in an exciting match.
