Lorena Ochoa began playing golf at a young age and was already a state champion by the time she was six years old. She won her first state event aged seven.
As a junior, the future world number one captured 22 state events in Guadalajara and 44 national events in Mexico. At the Junior World Golf Championships, Ochoa won five titles consecutively. The Mexican continued with her success in college where she won several tournaments before turning pro.
Ochoa dropped out of college after her second year to in order to play golf professionally. Following her impressive performance at the 2002 Futures Event, Ochoa was invited to compete on the LPGA Tour. In 2004, she won her first titles on the LPGA Tour, becoming the first Mexican born golfer to win an event in the tour. The titles she won that year were Franklin American Mortgage Championship and the Wachovia LPGA Classic.
With her continued success on the LPGA Tour, Ochoa eventually reached the summit in the rankings, becoming the number one female golfer in the world in 2007. Her dominance would continue afterwards as she claimed the Women’s British Open, Safeway Classic and CN Canadian Women’s Open.
In April 2010, Ochoa shocked the world by announcing her retirement from professional golf. She was just 28 and still winning titles. Her last tournament was the Tres Marias Championship that took place after she announced her desires to retire.
