Steve Louis Fisher is a former American head coach who left an indelible mark on his athletes and serves as a testament to the lasting impact he had on them. His journey began as a player at Illinois State University where he helped lead the Redbirds to the Final Four of the 1967 NCAA College Division basketball tournament.

His talent was recognized by the Detroit Pistons who drafted him in 1967 and only played for one season as his career was cut short due to injuries. After that, he became a coach and his role was centred on philosophy, discipline and hard work. Steve fostered a culture of hard work and commitment by helping his players reach their full potential.

As a coach, his effort was seen through his players resulting in numerous successes with several of his athletes going on to successful professional careers including NBA stars Kawhi Leonard and Jammal Franklin.

Fisher retired from his coaching career back in 2017, leaving behind a legacy of remarkable achievements including leading the Michigan Wolverines to their first national championship and he also transformed San Diego State into a perennial NCAA. He has been honoured with numerous awards like the Naismith Men’s College Coach of the Year Award in 2011 and the John R. Wooden Legends of Coaching Award.

Steve Louis Fisher was born in Herrin, Illinois, U.S. on March 24 1945 and grew up with a strong work ethic instilled by his family. He attended Herrin High School where he excelled both in academics and basketball, laying the foundation for his future success under coach Paul Price.

Fisher earned a basketball scholarship that gave him a chance to play at a higher level and pursue his collegiate aspirations. His then coach Bill Games paved the way for Fisher’s leadership and development as a player.

The retired head coach got assistant coaching stints at Western Michigan University and Illinois State, opportunities that exposed him to different coaching styles and his desire to lead.

Fisher has been married to Cathy Fisher for over fifty years and has two children.
