The auction of a racket used by Novak Djokovic at the 2016 French Open finally went down and made history, selling for $107,500.

Many people remember the fierce contest at the Roland Garros finals, which Djokovic won using the auctioned racket.

To solidify his position among the all-time greats and complete a career Grand Slam, Djokovic’s biggest hurdle was to win the French Open.

Only a handful of players have achieved the coveted career Grand Slam, winning all four major tournaments.

They include Fred Perry, Don Budge, Roy Emerson, Rod Laver, Andre Agassi, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer.

Djokovic’s quest to join this exclusive club finally paid off and it was a magical moment for him. He tossed it into the French Open audience, and a fan, Abby Doherty caught it.

Doherty recalls that it happened obliviously but she was lucky enough to have the racket.

“It was all in slow motion. He just flung it into the crowd. I had an “Oh my God” moment because it was coming right toward us. It hit my hand and it was deflected to the ground. I sprinted to it and put my foot on the racquet and grabbed the handle. I held onto it real tight,” she recalls.

She ran after Djokovic after the match, looking for an autograph but he didn’t take notice of her.

Novak Djokovic Racket Auction

The ultimate price for the Djokovic frame has now been made public. She had been holding onto the head racket for a few years, but she chose to cash in on her valuable asset.

With the hope of selling it for more than $50,000, the racket was listed for auction on the SCP website.

The estimate proved to be significantly low, as the racket sold for a final price of $107,500. It guaranteed a very wonderful Christmas for the fans who were the fortunate ones to catch it on that historic day in Paris.

It is estimated that the final amount is the second-highest amount ever spent on a single tennis racket.

It trails only $125,000 paid for Billie Jean King’s wooden racket from her renowned 1973 “Battle of the Sexes” match against Bobby Rig.

Roger Federer Racket Auction

In 2021, Roger Federer auctioned off a huge collection of his apparel and rackets to raise money for his foundation, which resulted in the most profitable sale of tennis memorabilia.

The Roger Federer Foundation got all the proceeds from the sale. Estimates on lots that included clothing and rackets worn by the legendary Swiss player during some of his Grand Slam victories were shattered when they went up for auction at Christie’s in London.

The first action featured 19 lots altogether, including the clothing and racket he used in his lone French Open victory as well as apparel and rackets from his multiple Wimbledon victories.

Those parcels sold for an astounding £1,329,375 ($1,687,136.60) in total. Federer also put minor goods, such as sweatbands, up for auction online. That sale brought in an astounding £2,099,750 ($2,665,182) in revenue.

Djokovic now joins the big four in tennis, whose rackets are in the books of history for auctioning the most expensive tennis rackets.

They include Federer, Jean King, Serena Williams and Björn Borg. Borg, the legendary Swedish tennis star, remains an iconic figure in the sport.

His 1977 Wimbledon racket, used during his victory at the prestigious tournament, was auctioned in 2017 for a staggering $160,000. The sale reflected Borg’s dominance in the 1970s and his lasting impact on the game.

Williams, who retired in 2022 after the US Open, made history both on and off the court. Her 2012 U.S. Open racket, used during her championship victory, was auctioned in 2013 for a remarkable $175,000.

This sale solidified her status as a tennis legend and a cultural icon.
