Matt Riddle fell in love with combat sports at a young age. He was a New York state wrestling champion while at Saratoga Springs High School. He also beat future UFC champion Jon Jones twice while still at high school.

Matt Riddle made his professional MMA debut at The Ultimate Fighter 7 Finale on 21 June 2008, defeating Dante Rivera via unanimous decision. He recorded his second victory in his next fight, which was against Steve Bruno, via unanimous decision.
