While at high school, Lennox Lewis excelled in basketball, soccer and Canadian football. He decided to make boxing his favourite sport when he was 13 and started training hard. The future heavyweight champion competed on the amateur scene where he achieved success.
In 1983, Lewis won a gold medal at the Junior World Championship. He represented Canada the following year at the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. He was at the time ranked as the sixth-best heavyweight boxer in the world and made it to the quarterfinals, where he lost to American Tyrell Biggs.
In 1989, Lennox Lewis returned to England with the aim of turning professional. He signed with boxing promoter Frank Maloney and went undefeated in his first 22 professional fights.
Lewis quickly rose through the ranks and had his first title shot after defeating Donovan “Razor” Ruddock. He was to challenge Riddick Bowe, who had defeated the then champion Evander Holyfield. However, Bowe opted not to fight Lewis and handed over the WBC title, which Lewis received in December 1992.
Lewis became the first Briton to hold the heavyweight title in the 20th century and defended it three times before losing it in a controversial fight in 1994. Lewis is one of the greatest British boxers alongside the likes of Tyson Fury, Frank Bruno and Naseem Hamed.
