Jeremy Doku stars as Man City run riot against Bournemouth

Manchester City thrashed Bournemouth 6-1 on Saturday evening to extend their winning home run in the Premier League to 15 games. Summer signing Jeremy Doku stole the show with a goal and four assists as City secured a massive win at the Etihad Stadium to go top of the table.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was full of praise for Doku saying the youngster reminded him of Lionel Messi. Asked if Doku is one of the best players in Europe, Guardiola said: “In the world. I said that many times.He made a good shot from a short corner and then after the first goal, the action for the second looks like Messi. I remembered, in that moment, Messi did that many times. Maybe that’s too much of a compliment to him! But he deserves it.”

City were 3-0 up before half-time and Doku had a hand in all three goals. The Belgian winger put his team ahead after half an hour with a fine finish following a one-two with Rodri. His trickery then led to the second goal scored by Bernardo Silva barely three minutes later. Doku’s long-range shot deflected in off Manuel Akanji’s back for the hosts third, which was the centre-back’s first ever goal for Manchester City.

Erling Haaland, who missed two chances late in the first half to add to City’s tally, was taken off at half-time after limping down the tunnel. Bournemouth were relieved to see the Norwegian goalscorer substituted and came back playing better after the break.

The visitors scored two minutes after the break but Dominic Solanke’s goal was ruled out for offside. Solanke hit the woodwork a few minutes later, but City would then regain control of the match adding a fourth. Once again, it was Doku who assisted the goal which was scored by substitute Phil Foden. It was Foden’s fourth goal in five matches against Bournemouth.

The Cherries’ consolation came in the 74th minute after a raft of City changes, with Rico Lewis, Matheus Nunes and Kalvin Phillips replacing John Stones, Julian Alvarez and Rodri. The goal was scored by Luis Sinisterra who tapped home a beautiful Max Aarons cross.

But City were not done yet, as Jeremy Doku slipped Bernardo Silva through on goal, with the midfielder chipping Radu over the line. The ball was cleared away after crossing the line but Matheus Nunes slammed home to ensure the goal would have still stood. The goal was awarded to Silva.

Oscar Bobb, who replaced Silva in the 85th minute, picked up his first senior-level assist when he crossed to Nathan Ake to head home in the 88th minute.

Whereas Bournemouth are yet to win a Premier League away match since April, it was a routine victory for Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.
