Charlton, who is one of United’s greatest players of all time, died on Saturday aged 86.
The emotional atmosphere around Old Trafford prior to kick-off quickly turned to groans as United fans showed their frustrations in the first half. Erik ten Hag responded by introducing Christian Eriksen, who later assisted Harry Maguire’s goal in the 72nd minute.

Manchester United have now moved into third in Group A and within one point of Galatasaray, who suffered a 3-1 loss to Bayern Munich last night. Bayern are already closing in on qualification as they have made it three wins from three games. Meanwhile, Copenhagen are fourth in the group with one point.
How Manchester United Beat Copenhagen
United had lost their opening two Champions League matches and needed to win against Copenhagen to keep their hopes of proceeding to the knockout stages alive. Following a poignant remembrance of Sir Bobby Charlton, it was time for Erik ten Hag’s men to get into action.
However, Copenhagen were the quicker starters, with Diogo Goncalves’ strike hitting the post. Mohamed Elyounoussi then saw his effort deflected wide by Harry Maguire.
Manchester United came close to scoring later as Rasmus Hojlund got a sight of goal but fired over the bar after receiving a brilliant pass from Marcus Rashford. The Red Devils would then begin controlling the game and had another opportunity which fell on Scott McTominay’s path after a good run from Antony and a backheel pass from Hojlund. However, the Scott couldn’t find the back of the net after an intervention from Peter Ankersen.
Manchester United fans were showing their frustrations after the reset and Erik ten Hag made the right call by introducing Christian Eriksen. The hosts finally had a reason to celebrate when Maguire met Eriksen’s cross in the box to head home with 18 minutes left.
Scott McTominay had a golden opportunity to score United’s second of the night but he missed. The midfielder then caused a penalty in added time to put his side’s lead in jeopardy. However, Onana stepped in to make a crucial save in what turned out to be the last kick of the game.
