- Nicolo Fagioli was being investigated for allegations of breaching betting rules
- The midfielder was being investigated alongside his national teammates Nicolo Zaniolo and Sandro Tonali
- Fagioli will now serve a seven-month suspension for any football activity
Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagioli has received a seven-month suspension from the Italian Football Federation after being found guilty of breaching betting rules. Fagioli was penalized with a 12,500 euro fine and had five months of a one-year ban suspended, contingent upon his agreement to undergo at least six months of therapy to address his gambling issue.
The FIGC stated that the 22-year-old violated the rule that prohibits any form of betting on football events organized by FIGC, UEFA, and FIFA.
Despite having made his debut for Italy in a friendly against Albania last November, Fagioli’s single appearance was unable to shield him from the repercussions of his actions. As a result of the suspension, he was omitted from Italy’s squad for recent matches against Malta and England.
The punishment meted out to Fagioli comes in the wake of an investigation by the Turin Public Prosecutor’s Office into the alleged involvement of his compatriots, Sandro Tonali and Nicolo Zaniolo, in illicit betting activities.

Moreover, the consequences faced by Fagioli and his fellow players underscore the critical role played by regulatory bodies in upholding the integrity and ethical standards of the sport.
The Italian Football Federation’s decision to impose a suspension on Fagioli serves as a strong warning to players and stakeholders within the footballing community, emphasizing the zero-tolerance approach toward any form of betting irregularities. It also highlights the significance of instilling a culture of accountability and responsibility among players to maintain the credibility and fair play of the sport.
In addition, the Italian footballing authorities have consistently prioritized the enforcement of stringent regulations to safeguard the sport’s reputation and maintain the trust of fans and supporters worldwide. Fagioli’s suspension signifies the firm stance taken by the FIGC to uphold the principles of fair competition and ethical conduct among players, promoting a culture of integrity and professionalism within the football fraternity.
