Career
Shahid Afridi was introduced to sports in general and to cricket in particular by his uncle who is a colonel in the Pakistan Army.
Afridi’s international career began when he was selected for the 1996-97 Sameer Cup as a leg spinner. He replaced the injured Mushtaq Ahmed and batted as a pinch-hitter at number three in the first few matches.
On 2 October 1996, Shahid Afridi made his international debut for Pakistan in an ODI match against Kenya. Two years later, he made his Test debut in a three match series against Australia. The all-rounder’s Test career took a spike after several match-winning performances.
On 28 August 2006, Afridi made his T20I debut against England. At the inaugural T20I World Cup in 2007, the Pakistani talent was named as the player of the tournament. He helped his country win the next edition of the tournament in 2009 and was named player of the match in the final.
Shortly after the win, Afridi became Pakistan’s captain in T20I after the retirement of Younis Khan. In 2010, he became the captain of ODI.
On 31 May 2018, Shahid Afridi officially announced his retirement from international cricket. The all-rounder has also played at club and represented teams such as Deccan Charges, Kowloon Cantons, Melbourne Renegades, Karachi and Habib Bank Limited, among others.
