Manchester United have confirmed the departure of Mason Greenwood to La Liga club Getafe on loan until the end of this season. The youngster hasn’t played competitive football since December 2021. He had been suspended from Manchester United’s training and matches while the club completed internal investigations.

Greenwood had been accused of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault. However, the Crown Prosecution Service later dropped the case after the withdrawal of key witnesses. New materials also came to light that meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction.

After the charges were dropped, Manchester United continued with internal investigations and finally made a decision on Greenwood’s future a few days ago. The club announced that Greenwood was to leave this summer by mutual consent.

According to Manchester United’s statement, all parties involved recognized how difficult it would be for Greenwood to start his career again at Old Trafford.

Despite interests from several clubs who wanted to sign Mason Greenwood, Manchester United decided to loan him to Getafe. The move will enable the young forward to resume his career.

“The move enables Greenwood to begin to rebuild his career away from Manchester United. The club will continue to offer its support to Mason and his family during this period of transition.” Manchester United’s statement on Mason Greenwood’s transfer reads.

According to Daily Mail, Getafe will not pay a fee for the English forward. However, they will cover a small contribution for his wages for the duration of loan.

Manchester United Football Director John Murtough had taken over discussions for Greenwood’s transfer. Italian side Lazio were also interested in signing the young forward and even held talks with the Red Devils on the final day of the summer transfer window.

According to Lazio’s president Claudio Lotito, Mason Greenwood was keen on joining the club but Manchester United failed to sign the paperwork on time. Following the closure of the Italian transfer window on Friday evening, Lotito told La Lazio Siamo Noi: ‘I tried until the last minute’.

Apart from Lazio, Olympiacos and Red Star Belgrade were also keen on signing Mason Greenwood. But in the end, it is Getafe who have won the race to sign him.

After the announcement was made official, a bunch of Getafe supporters were spotted outside the Coliseum Alfonso Perez stadium dancing in jubilation.

Mason Greenwood’s contract with Manchester United is set to expire in 2025. Since making his debut in 2019 at the age of 17, Greenwood played in 129 games and scored 35 goals.

Following United’s conclusion of investigations a few days ago, Greenwood admitted that he had made mistakes and took share of his responsibility.
