Kevit Desai is the 51st Africa Concours d’Elegance winner. Desai achieved the feat with the immaculate and iconic 1968 Jaguar 420 before an enthusiastic audience of about 10,000 spectators who turned out for the event at Nairobi Racecourse.
On his way to his unassailable score, the indomitable Desai scored 37 points on the underside, 77 on external finish, 58 on interior boot and engine, 6 on road worthiness and 4 on the age of the car.
Desai celebrated his victory in the marque introduced at the October 1966 London Motor Show and produced for two years as the ultimate expression of a series of “compact sporting saloons” offered by Jaguar throughout that decade, all of which shared the same wheelbase.
Grayling May with a 1967 Alfa Romeo Sprint scored a cumulative total of 269 to finish second overall ahead of the team from Vitaform Products Limited with a 1966 MGB.
May racked up 35 points on the underside, 75 on external finish, 56 on interior boot and engine, 6 on road worthiness and 41on the age of the car.
Antoine wins overall motorcycle category
Dominique Antoine ‘s 1925 Triumph 550 SD emerged the overall winner of the Motorcycle category.
Second overall in class behind Antoine was Russel Hughes from Gilgil with a 1956 Ducati 65T whilst David Odhuno in a 1989 Yamaha Super Tenere settled for third.
Tumaini Muthiga, dubbed the Eliud Kipchoge of Concours, entered four cars and two motorcycles most of which won awards at the annual event.
With an apparently insatiable appetite for success, Tumaini’s 1999 Harley Davidson won Class 17 (of the street motorcycles from1301cc to 1600cc) ahead of Ugandan Edward Mbabazi (2013 BMW. K1600T Tourer).
Asked what brings him back to the event time and time again, Tumaini quipped: “Its the passion and a good eye for the car. It’s a good hobby.”
This year’s event was graced by newly elected Kenya Motors Sports Federation (KMSF) Chairman Maina Muturi who commended fans for their continued enthusiasm in the event.
Biggest crowdpuller in KMSF calendar
The annual Concours showpiece is one of the biggest crowd pullets in the KMSF calendar attracting thousands of spectators every year.
According to Chairman of Alfa Romeo Owners Club Peter Wanday, the theme for this year’s event is Afrofussion to celebrate the vast diversity and colorful nature that Africa has to offer.
The Concours d’Elegance is sanctioned by KMSF, FIM Africa and Motorcycle Sports Federation of Kenya (MSFK).
This year’s event attracted 76 cars and 41 motorcycles.
