Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma were thumped 4-1 by Genoa in a Serie A fixture on Thursday evening at Stadio Luigi Ferraris. Genoa had not managed to secure a victory in their last 16 attempts against their Serie A rivals and were heading into this fixture after two defeats and one draw.

Nonetheless, they earned three points against Jose Mourinho’s side, thanks to goals from Albert Gudmundsson, Mateo Retegui, Morten Thorsby and Junior Messias.

This was Roma’s third defeat in six games this season and it leaves them reeling in sixteenth spot, just two points above the relegation zone. Aiming for a return to the Champions League next season, Roma are now ten points behind league leaders Inter Milan. Meanwhile, Genoa have moved to eleventh place with seven points after recording their second victory of the season.

Speaking after the humiliating defeat at Genoa, Jose Mourinho said he is enduring the worst start to a season as a manager. However, he refused to blame his players for the loss but urged them to work harder in training as they aim to bounce back.

“It’s true, it’s the worst beginning of the season ever for Roma and for me as manager. However, I also think it is the first time that Roma have played two European Finals in a row. We have no time to cry. We can cry internally, because it hurts our heart, especially for me because of my rapport with the Roma fans. But tomorrow we will be back at work. The next game is worth three points, not seven or eight, but it becomes a very, very important match for us.” Daily Mail quotes Jose Mourinho.

Jose Mourinho guided Roma to back-to-back European finals, winning the Europa Conference League in his first season. They then lost to Sevilla in the final of Europa League in April this year.

Jose Mourinho’s Third Season Struggles Continue

Over the years, Jose Mourinho has struggled to find success in his third season at a club. The Portuguese manager only made it to a successive fourth season in his career once, which was during his first spell at Chelsea.

While coaching Real Madrid, Jose Mourinho was shown the door after his third campaign where the La Liga giants only won the Spanish Super Cup. In his second spell at Chelsea, he was dismissed in December of the 2015-16 season after losing nine of  the first 16 Premier League matches.
