Dawn Michelle Staley was born on May 4 1970 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Clarence and Estelle Staley and has four older siblings.

The coach started playing basketball at a young age and played high school basketball at Dobbins Tech, where she led her team to three straight public league championships, being named USA Today’s National High School Player of the Year in her senior year.

After high school, she attended the University of Virginia, where she played college basketball for the Cavaliers.

Through her leadership, the Cavaliers won four NCAA tournaments, three Final Fours and one national championship game. She was named the ACC  Female Athlete of the Year and the National Player of the Year for two consecutive years.

After graduating from the University she played professionally for several teams in the American Basketball League and the Women’s National Basketball Association.

She retired from playing professional basketball and began her coaching career where she served as an assistant coach for the Temple University Women’s basketball team before she was promoted to head coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Staley is also the head coach of the US women’s national basketball team and she helped them win a gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
