West Ham United have completed the signing of midfielder James Ward-Prowse from Championship club Southampton.
Ward-Prowse’s move to West Ham brings to an end his 20-year spell at Southampton, having joined the club at the age of eight. The 28-year-old has secured a transfer to West Ham for a fee believed to be around £30 million. According to the club’s official website, Ward-Prowse has signed a four-year deal and is expected to stay until June 2027.

Speaking after signing the contract, the midfielder said he is more than ready to play his role at West Ham.
“I’m buzzing to be here at West Ham United. It’s great to be here and I’m looking forward to getting going. From the outside looking in, this is a Club that has been on the rise for a number of years now and coming off the success in the UEFA Europa Conference League last year, you can feel there is real momentum around this Club. It’s great to be a part of it and I can’t wait to play my role in the games to come.” Ward-Prowse said as per West Ham’s official website.
Ward-Prowse, who is a set-piece specialist, will wear the number seven shirt at West Ham. He has arrived fit and is expected to make his debut in Sunday’s Premier League fixture against Chelsea.
James Ward-Prowse began his football journey at East Lodge in 2001. He then joined Southampton two years later and played his first match at just 16 years and eleven months.
While at Southampton, Ward-Prowse established himself as one of the best free-kick takers in the world. The central midfielder has been a key player for the Saints over the last decade. Apart from his outstanding delivery of set pieces, he is also known for his passing, shooting, leadership and quality.

Ward-Prowse leaves Southampton after making 410 appearances in all competitions. He netted 55 times and provided 54 assists for the Saints. West Ham boss David Moyes praised Ward-Prowse while welcoming him at the club.
“I’m delighted to bring a player of James’ quality and experience to West Ham United. He’s performed to a very high level in the Premier League over the last decade, constantly producing good numbers season after season. His leadership qualities are obviously another huge plus for us – he’ll be a big voice for us, someone who drives the team on from the middle of the pitch.” West Ham’s official website quotes David Moyes.
Following the departure of Declan Rice to Arsenal for £100 million several weeks ago, West Ham have money to spend. The Hammers have so far made two signings, with Ward-Prowse’s arrival following that of Mexico midfielder Edson Álvarez. They are still in the market and could sign Harry Maguire before the window is closed.
