Last season’s Champions League winners Manchester City have added the UEFA Super Cup to the Treble following victory over Sevilla on penalties.

The Cytizens came from behind in an entertaining match to force penalty shootouts. Youssef En-Nesyri opened the scoring for Sevilla in the first half before Cole Palmer rose at the far post in the second half to equalize for City. Palmer had already made an impact for Manchester City several days ago when he scored a spectacular goal against Arsenal in the Community Shield.

During the match against Sevilla, Ederson made a number of crucial saves for City. Sevilla’s goalkeeper Bono also made fine blocks to deny City’s centre-back Nathan Ake the opportunity to score. With the sides unable to be separated at the full time whistle, the match went straight into penalty shootout.

There was tension from the players, but that wasn’t seen in the quality of the first nine penalties taken inside Greece’s Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium. Stepping up for the tenth penalty was Sevilla’s Nemanja Gudelj, who ended up hitting the crossbar to hand City their first ever victory in the UEFA Super Cup.

While we all know City were not so much in need of the UEFA Super Cup as they wanted the Champions League, Pep Guardiola made it clear how he desperately needed the trophy.

Guardiola is now the first coach to win the Super Cup with three different clubs, having previously won it with FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich. It was also his fourth European Super Cup, equalling Carlo Ancelotti as the manager with most titles in the competition.

Speaking after the memorable victory in Athens, proud Guardiola said City were lucky because Ederson saved them at crucial points.

“I’m proud. A lot. We knew it from moments earlier in the season and the quality of opponent. We were lucky because Eddy, like in the final moments of the Champions League final, saved us in the right moments. In general, the game was really good, though we played better in the last 30 minutes of the second half.” Pep Guardiola is quoted by Manchester City’s official website.

Pep Guardiola has now overseen 15 major trophies since joining Manchester City in 2016. The trophy cabinet includes five Premier League titles, one UEFA Champions League, one UEFA Super Cup, two FA Cups, two Community Shields and four League Cups.

The Cytizens still have an opportunity to add another trophy to their cabinet before the end of this year. They will be travelling to Saudi Arabia in December to participate in the FIFA Club World Cup.
