Nigerian female football player Asisat Oshoala is the talk of the town for days now as the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup takes shape.
Oshoala, 28, hit the interwebs after scoring the winning goal for Nigeria’s Super Falcons over Australia. Nigeria won 3-2 which sent the Nigerian female football star on a celebration spirit. She took off her shirt in celebration but this angered some quarters among them her father.
She posted on her Instagram page that her act as a Muslim woman angered her father.
“My dad is definitely not happy with my choice of celebration but then again, Life is a collection of MOMENTS,” posted the striker for FC Barcelona (Barca Femeni).
WHO IS ASISAT OSHOALA?
Asisat Oshoala hails from Ikorodu, Lagos where she was born on October 9, 1994. She took a particular interest in football from an early age and started playing on the streets of Lagos. Her family and neighbours were impressed by her enthusiasm and innate talent for the sport, and they urged her to take football seriously.
She began her football career by playing for a number of local youth teams in Lagos and landed a spot in FC Robo, a women’s football team headquartered in Lagos, because of her remarkable skills. She was then picked to represent Nigeria at the junior level after her club performances drew the attention of the Nigerian national team selectors.
As the Nigerian representative at the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Germany, Oshoala’s climb to fame grew. She had a fantastic tournament and finished first in scoring, which helped Nigeria win the match. She was recognized as the best player and leading scorer of the tournament after winning the Golden Boot and Golden Ball trophies for her efforts.
For the purpose of advancing her football career, Oshoala relocated to Europe in 2015. Her first England team was Liverpool FC Women where she made a significant contribution and won the 2015 BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year award. Following a successful tenure at Liverpool, Oshoala relocated to China in 2017 to play for Dalian Quanjian (later known as Dalian Quanjian FC).
This team competed in the Chinese Women’s Super League. She kept doing well, winning the league championship and was voted the league’s Best Striker in 2017. Asisat Oshoala signed a contract with FC Barcelona Femen in Spain in 2019. In the 2020–2021 season, she won the UEFA Women’s Champions League and multiple league championships while playing for Barcelona, adding further hardware to her trophy case.

As a striker for FC Barcelona Femení, Asisat Oshoala makes between £10,500 (($13, 300) per week and £40,000 ($50, 700) monthly. She joined the Spanish team in 2019 and she has made a name for herself. Her income from international football places her net worth at $3 million making her the wealthiest female Nigerian footballer. Her career has given her endorsement deals with Nike among other leading sports brands.
She is unmarried but has a daughter. Despite her unhitched statuts, Oshoala has long been linked to Warri Wolves FC’s Abu Azeez. There are long-running reports of them getting engaged in 2017. However, she disputed these claims in the past. She founded the Asisat Oshoala Foundation in 2019, with the purpose of empowering female football players in Africa. The Foundation puts on the Asisat Oshoala Foundation Football4girls competition each year in Lagos.
