As Premier League teams continue to make transfers, the summer offers players the possibility of a new beginning.

We look at players who struggled to contribute at their individual clubs last season, whether it was due to form, fitness, or favor, and a change of environment is necessary to restart their careers.

Harry Maguire

Harry Maguire, a center-back who had difficulty getting playing time at Manchester United last season, had to make a choice on his future this summer, Erik ten Hag ominously said.

Maguire was benched after the Red Devils’ back-to-back losses to start the season, and he has struggled to recapture his form ever since, making only eight Premier League appearances by the season’s conclusion.

Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, and Victor Lindelof were chosen ahead of the 30-year-old in Ten Hag’s eyes, and on occasion, Luke Shaw was chosen above the defender in the center of the field.

Four seasons after his £80 million world-record signing to the club from Leicester, Maguire’s tenure with the club appears to be coming to an end as United are rumored to be looking for a second center-back this summer.

Due to his inconsistent performances over the last two seasons, the defender has suffered with confidence. Maguire may gain this summer with a transfer away from the Old Trafford glare.

Philippe Coutinho

The presence of Steven Gerrard at Aston Villa made Philippe Coutinho’s transfer possible, and the Brazilian was reunited with his old Liverpool teammate at Villa Park.

After a promising beginning to his loan assignment, the transfer was made permanent, but three months into the new season, Gerrard was fired. Before Gerrard left, Coutinho was having trouble with his form, and things didn’t get any better when Unai Emery took over as captain.

The 31-year-old found himself on the outside of a club that was on the rise under the new head coach, finishing the Premier League season with only seven league starts and one goal scored.

Both a move back to Brazil and the rich Saudi Arabia project have been linked to Coutinho. Although his future is unclear, it seems to be away from Aston Villa.

Rob Holding

Rob Holding has played for Arsenal for seven seasons without ever being regarded as a regular, so this summer may be the right moment to go and look for a position of prominence.

In the previous two seasons, the 27-year-old has made only 15 league starts, and a string of underwhelming performances during William Saliba’s absence last season raised questions about his readiness for Mikel Arteta’s build-up play from the back.

Holding has a limited chance of earning a regular spot in the team for the upcoming season with the presence of William Saliba and Gabriel at center defense, as well as the central versatility of Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu.

Donny van de Beek

At Manchester United, Donny van de Beek has lost his sparkle.

His three seasons with the team have been nothing short of a nightmare, and his once-promising career has been severely derailed since joining for £35 million from Ajax.

The 26-year-old has only made six league starts for the Red Devils, and he watched much of last season from the sidelines before suffering a knee injury in March that ended his career.

After working with his countryman at Ajax, there was hope that Erik Ten Hag’s appointment as manager would help the midfielder’s career get back on track. However, opportunities were few due to the arrival of Christian Eriksen and the ongoing significance of Bruno Fernandes.

After a dismal stint in the Premier League, Van de Beek is no longer considered for the Netherlands team and may use a change of scenery. At the time of his arrival, he was seen to be one of the most intriguing prospects outside of Europe’s top five divisions, but at Old Trafford, he has since vanished into oblivion.
