Marketa Vondrousova wins Wimbledon after beating Ons Jabeur

Marketa Vondrousova from Czech Republic is the 2023 women’s singles Wimbledon champion after defeating Ons Jabeur, 4-6, 4-6.

This is her first Grand Slam and she is now a history maker by becoming the third female Czech player to win a Wimbledon Grand Slam.

Others include Petra Kvitova, and Jana Novotna. She congratulate Jabeur for a well-played match saying she enjoyed every bit of it.

“It is an amazing feeling. Ons, congratulations to you, and you are just an inspiration to all of us. I hope you win one day as I know you are an amazing person and you are doing an amazing job,” she said in a post-match conference.

Vondrousova’s victory shows no human is limited adding that she was in a cast last year during Wimbledon and she never thought she would win a major slam in 2023.

“After everything I have been through, I had a cast on this time last year. it is amazing to stand here and hold this [trophy]. Tennis is crazy. The comebacks aren’t easy. You never know what to expect. I was hoping I could come back at this level. And now this is happening. I want to thank my box. All of you guys are amazing.”

On the other hand, Jabeur was gutted and she couldn’t hold back tears at losing the Wimbledon final.

She feels that it is her most painful loss of the year but admits Vondrousova played well. The Tunisian who would have become the first Arab and African woman to win at Wimbledon says she is not giving up yet.
