Manchester City legend David Silva has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 37. Silva shared a message on social media confirming he has ended his 20-year playing career.
The announcement came as a surprise to many football fans as Silva was still a crucial player for Real Sociedad. The former Spain international was about to embark on a fourth season with the Spanish side when he announced his retirement.

David Silva has ended his football career due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury he sustained in a pre-season training.
“Today is a sad day for me. Today it is time to say goodbye to what I have dedicated my whole life to. Today it is time to say goodbye to my colleagues, who are like family to me. I will miss you very much. Ches (Valencia), Armeros (Eibar), Celtinas (Celta Vigo), Citizens (Man City) and Txuri Urdines (Real Sociedad)…thank you because you have made me feel at home.” David Silva said on a video posted on his official Twitter account.
Silva enjoyed a successful decade in England with the Cytizens before joining Real Sociedad in 2020. The La Liga side wrote a lengthy message on their website after Silva announced his retirement
“It is a sad day, not only for the entire txuri urdin family, but for the entire world of football. A great player with capital letters is leaving, a legend who has amazed his game wherever he has gone. We are touched, but we must say and we say, with immense pride, that we have enjoyed during the last three years one of the greatest talents that the history of this sport has produced.” Part of Real Sociedad’s message on David Silva announcing his retirement reads.
David Silva, one of the greatest playmakers the football world has ever seen, started his career at Valencia in 2000. He went through the club’s youth system for three years before making his senior debut in 2003. With Valencia, Silva won the 2007-08 Copa del Rey trophy.
In the summer of 2010, David Silva joined English club Manchester City. The Spanish midfielder went on to achieve great success with City, winning four Premier League titles, two FA Cups and five League Cups. During his time with the Cytizens, he made 436 appearances and scored 77 goals.

A hugely popular figure at Manchester City, Davis Silva has a statue which was unveiled outside the Etihad Stadium in 2021. His statue is next to those of fellow Man City legends Sergio Aguero and Vincent Kompany, who already ended their playing careers. Wikipedia describes Silva as one of the greatest players in Manchester City’s history.
