Boston Celtics star player Jaylen Brown has agreed to sign the richest deal in NBA history, a five-year supermax extension worth up to $303.7 million, according to his agent, Jason Glushon, as reported by ESPN on Tuesday.

Brown and Glushon had a meeting with Celtics management and ownership in Boston on Sunday to finalize the remaining details of the historic deal, which will keep the two-time All-Star under contract until the 2028-29 season.

This deal surpasses Nikola Jokic’s $276 million extension with the Denver Nuggets, as it takes into account the rise in the salary cap and league revenue. The 26-year-old Brown underwent a physical in Boston on Monday to formalize the agreement.

Brown became eligible for the five-year supermax extension after earning second-team All-NBA honours in the 2022-23 season. He and his teammate Jayson Tatum, who will be eligible for a supermax extension next summer, form one of the NBA’s most productive duos and are considered vital pillars of the Celtics’ championship aspirations.

Last season, Brown achieved career-best stats with 26.6 points per game and a shooting percentage of 49%. In the final year of his previous contract, he will earn $31.8 million for the upcoming season.

Under the new deal, Brown will earn $52.3 million starting in the 2024-25 season and $69.1 million in the final year of the contract, 2028-29. Since he signed an extension, Brown is not eligible for a no-trade clause.

Together, Tatum and Brown averaged 56.7 points per game last season, making them the fourth-most productive duo since the 1976-77 merger, according to ESPN Stats & Information research. They also accomplished the feat of scoring 30 points in 10 games, a milestone previously achieved only by Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant in the last 30 seasons. Brown’s ability as a shot creator improved last season, with 54% of his made shots being unassisted, resulting in a career-high of 1.15 points per direct drive, according to Second Spectrum.

Throughout Brown’s seven NBA seasons, the Celtics have consistently made the playoffs, including reaching the NBA Finals in 2022 and three Eastern Conference finals trips. He was drafted by Boston as the third overall pick from UC-Berkeley in 2016.

Off the court, Brown is a successful businessman, fashion enthusiast, and mentor for numerous children. He is also actively involved in philanthropy in both Boston and internationally. Currently serving as the vice president of the National Basketball Players Association, Brown has been engaged in various partnerships to provide equal education and leadership opportunities to the youth of colour through his 7uice Foundation. He is currently hosting the third annual Bridge Program in Boston for 100 public school students and has plans to mentor over 200 local students in Kenya during the offseason. Brown was also one of the 20 NBA players who participated in the NBPA’s “The Sanctuary,” a performance retreat for players held in Andalucía, Spain.
