Adrian Newey a Red Bull design engineer is the man to thank for the team’s stellar F1 season and not Max Verstappen who drives the RB19 according to Mark Webber, an ex-Red Bull driver.
Verstappen won the British Grand at Silverstone, giving Red Bull a perfect 10-for-10 record so far this season. It was Verstappen’s sixth straight victory which makes him the indisputable front-runner for the third World Championship in the 2023 season.
The Dutch driver now 25 years old, won 33 of the previous 54 races dating back to his first title-winning season in 2021.
He is leading his teammate Sergio Perez by 99 points in the Drivers’ standings. With all this success, Webber says that Newey is the man behind this success.
WHY IS ADRIAN NEWEY CRUCIAL TO RED BULL?
According to Webber, a seven-season Red Bull driver, Newey is the success factor in the Christian Horner-led team. Webber stated during ITV’s broadcast of the Goodwood Festival of Speed that Newey’s absence would have made the 2023 championship race considerably more competitive.

However, his presence is good news to Red Bull who are dominating the season effortlessly. Webber further views the combination of Verstappen’s prowess in the cockpit and Newey’s technological brilliance as the ultimate dose of success for the team.
“I think it’s a problem. When you put Max Verstappen and Adrian Newey together, we have an issue. Adrian Newey [has] over 200 grand prix victories now as a designer. Adrian has a few more years, by all accounts, he said he is starting to go towards the end [of his career]. If Adrian wasn’t here, the Championship would be quite tight,” stated Webber who drove for Red Bull between 2007 and 2013.
The F1 pundit played a key role in the team’s run of four consecutive Constructors’ titles.
WHO IS ADRIAN NEWEY?
Adrian Newey is phenomenal in Formula One due to his success as one of the best F1 car designers of all time. He is an England native born on December 26, 1958, and has had a spectacular career spanning several decades.
Many F1 teams have experienced great success thanks to Newey’s engineering brilliance and ground-breaking ideas. He has an exceptional history of creating championship-winning cars for Williams, McLaren, and Red Bull Racing.
Newey’s vehicles are among the best in the sport and have won multiple World Championships throughout his career. The England-born automobile guru designed the vehicles at Williams that ruled the sport in the early to mid-1990s.
Williams-Renault vehicles won numerous Constructors’ Championships under drivers like Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, and Damon Hill.
He then joined McLaren in 1997 and continued his success story. Mika Hakkinen won back-to-back World Championships in the McLaren MP4/13, designed by Newey, in 1998 and 1999. Newey’s cars at McLaren had a daunting reputation for their technological prowess, aerodynamic effectiveness, and meticulousness.

Newey then joined Red Bull Racing in 2006, which was a young team at the time. It is here, that he has had the best of his design brilliance pay off handsomely. From 2010 through 2013; Red Bull Racing won four straight Constructors’ Championships under his design and it is the same script between 2021 and 2023. This success solidifies his position as a dominant power in Formula 1.
WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT ADRIAN NEWEY DESIGNS?
Looking at Verstappen’s success since 2021, Newey’s design comes out as well thought out with aggressive aerodynamics, cutting-edge design elements, and outstanding performance. It was the case at Williams and McLaren back in the day.
The Red Bull designer has a knack for going beyond what is permitted under the rules of the sport, frequently coming up with innovative ideas. His creations serve as the gold standard for excellence in Formula One which is a huge part of Red Bull’s success Matrix.
While Mercedes ruled the Constructor Championship between 2014 and 2021, Newey appears to be a step ahead of Lewis Hamilton’s team. The W14 which Hamilton is currently competing in has design flaws impeding its performance. It hasn’t matched up to RB19’s performance yet but team principal Toto Wolff is upbeat of a better season in 2024.
