- Gor Mahia lost 3-2 to Kakamega Homeboyz
- Tusker were held to a 1-1 draw by Posta Rangers
- The title will be determined on the last day on Sunday
The winner of the 2022-23 FKF Premier League title will be known on the last day of the season this Sunday, after the top two sides both failed to win their penultimate round of matches on Wednesday.
Leaders Gor Mahia were beaten 3-2 by Kakamega Homeboyz at the Moi Sports Centre Kasarani, while at the Ruaraka Complex, second placed Tusker FC failed to take advantage after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Posta Rangers.
The results mean Gor remain top of the league with 67 points, one ahead of second placed Tusker FC heading into Sunday’s matches. Gor Mahia will be up against City Stars in Nairobi while Tusker are away to already relegated Vihuga Bullets in Mumias.
“We didn’t quite play well and our passing wasn’t the best. We lost some very good chances, but at least with the other result, it means we are still on top and fate is still in our hands. We will try to do better against City Stars,” said Gor Mahia’s coach Jonathan McKinstry.
Meanwhile, Tusker skipper Humphrey Mieno has said the team will do its best to win their last match, though regrated they could not make the most of the favour from Homeboyz in beating Gor.
Wasn’t our day
“It is what it is today wasn’t our day. We had the chances to score but we couldn’t make the most use of them. We will look at the last match and go on to win and we see what happens. Fate is out of our hands and we will only control what we can at the moment,” Mieno said.
Against Rangers, Tusker struggled and had been given a warning as early as the second minute when Patrick Otieno ran behind the defense, but keeper Brian Bwire made a brilliant one on one save.
Tusker’s Shami Kibwana attempts a shot at goal
They found themselves trailing 1-0 after just nine minutes when Jackson Dwang beat the offside trap to loop the ball over Bwire.
The brewers were in panic mode and dumped balls in the Homeboyz box to try level. They came close with Rodgers Ouma firing a shot wide from the edge of the box while Charles Momanyi glanced his header inches wide from a corner.
In the second half they piled the pressure and Momanyi once again came close when he headed at goal from a Daniel Sakari long throw, but the ball was cleared off the line.
They finally got their goal when Sakari floated in a cross from the right and Deogratious Ojok chested it home from close range.
Brewers pile pressure on Posta
The brewers piled the pressure, and they were denied by the crossbar in the 62nd minute when Levin Odhiambo’s brilliant freekick beat the keeper but knocked against the woodwork.
On the other end, Tusker dodged a bullet twice when Patrick Otieno and Brian Marita both missed one on one chances, saved by Bwire.
Towards the end, Tusker who had brought on Jackson Macharia, David Majak and Eric Mmata to try win the game came close when the Posta keeper missed a long throw from Sakari.
However, Majak failed to pull the trigger in time and laid the ball for Ouma who fired over.
