- Golden State Warrior forward Draymond Green is set to become a free agent
- Draymond Green was offered a $27.6 million player option but has since declined the option
- Green has been playing for the Warriors since 2012 becoming a regular player for 11 seasons
Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green has informed Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul that he will decline his $27.6 million player option and enter unrestricted free agency, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
Paul stated that they will continue to engage in discussions with the Golden State Warriors while exploring all available options. It was widely anticipated that Green would opt out, which now allows him to negotiate with the Warriors, explore sign-and-trade possibilities, and consider offers from other teams.
During his introduction as the new general manager of the Warriors, Mike Dunleavy Jr. emphasized the importance of retaining Green. He expressed a strong desire to bring him back, recognizing his significance to the organization and the team’s pursuit of championship success.
As a four-time All-Star, Green has been a cornerstone of the Warriors’ dynasty for the past decade. He was selected with the 35th overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft and has since become the heart and soul of the team, known for his defensive prowess and leadership qualities.

However, Green’s leadership came under scrutiny this past season after an incident where he punched teammate Jordan Poole during training camp. Warriors coach Steve Kerr labelled it as the franchise’s most significant crisis during his tenure, acknowledging that it had a lingering impact on the team throughout the season. Green struggled to fully regain the trust of his teammates after the altercation.
Green openly acknowledged that the incident affected his ability to lead vocally and sometimes with intensity, qualities that have fueled Golden State’s success in the past. He believed this hindered the team from performing at its full potential. Nevertheless, there is optimism that all parties involved can move forward, with both Green and Poole expected to be part of the team next season.
In the recently concluded season, Green posted averages of 8.5 points on 52.7% shooting, 7.2 rebounds, and 6.8 assists per game. Despite the challenges faced, Green remains a valuable asset due to his versatility and contributions on both ends of the court.
With Green’s decision to enter free agency, the upcoming negotiations will shape the future of his career and the direction of the Golden State Warriors. The team will aim to retain his services, understanding the pivotal role he plays in their pursuit of future success.
