Ighalo was born on June 16th 1989 in Ajegunle, a ghetto area in the state of Lagos, a place known for harboring musical and football talents. His parents are Paul Ighalo and Martin Ighalo, has two siblings who are Daniel Ighalo and Mary Atole.

His father was unemployed while the mother worked as a small trader selling provisions and soft drinks.

He dropped out of school to play in a local pitch known as Macarena. His turning point came when a FIFA agent of Argentine origin saw his talent and took him to Norway where he was placed on trial.

He is married to Sonia Ighalo and they have a son. He is a devout Christian believer while his mother is a Muslim and part of his money goes into Charitable organizations in Nigeria.

Career

Odion played for local clubs in Nigeria before he left for Norway, joining Tippeligaen in 2007. He made his debut in a match against Viking which helped his team win and his performance attracted other Tippeligaen Clubs.

In 2008, Udinese and Lyn sealed a deal of five years which saw him move to a Serie A club. The following year, he was sent on a loan to a Spanish Club known as Granada. His first season at Granada, he was instrumental to the Club’s advancement.

In season 2010-11, he was sent on a loan to Cesena where he played for a short period.

In 2011-2014, his loan stint continued at Granada where he was returned back after playing for Cesena for only one season. He helped his side earn promotion to the La Liga and debuted in the top tier league in August 2011.

In 2014, Udinese agreed to send him to the English Premier League Club Watford on a loan. In august that year, he debuted for the Club in the Carabao Cup where he scored his first goal for Watford.

Later in the year, Udinese released him from his contract and Watford terminated their loan deal offering him a permanent deal. One year after, he scored his first premier League goal in his first EPL game.

He scored a crucial goal against Arsenal which helped Watford advance to the semifinals of the FA Cup. He agreed on a five years contract with Watford for the following season.

One year later, he moved to the Chinese Super League Changchun Yatai for $25 million where he ranked second scorer but the Club suffered relegation. He was offered a contract extension worth $502,752 per week by Shanghai Shenhua.

He had an offer for Barcelona but turned it down in favor of Shanghai Greenland Shenhua. The following year, he moved to Manchester United on a loan. On February 2021, he joined Saudi League AL Shabab on a two-and-a-half-year contract.

In 2022, he joined Al-Hilal and his contract ends in June 2023.

In 2018, he played for Nigeria in the 2018 FIFA World Cup held in Russia. In 2019, he scored the most goals at the 2019 AFCON helping Nigeria emerge third.
