  • Manchester City played host to West Ham United in a Premier League clash on Wednesday evening
  • City needed a win to go back on top of the table ahead of title rivals Arsenal
  • Goals from Ake, Haaland and Foden secured the victory but Haaland’s goal was a record breaker
  • Haaland has now scored the most goals in a Premier League season surpassing former record

Manchester City won 3-0 against West Ham in a Premier League match on Wednesday, with Erling Haaland setting a new record for most goals in a single season. Haaland’s 70th-minute goal brought his tally for the campaign to 35, surpassing the previous record held by Andy Cole and Alan Shearer.

City’s Nathan Ake had earlier headed the home side in front on 50 minutes, and Phil Foden wrapped up victory with a long-range volley. The win took City above Arsenal at the top of the table, and with a game in hand, they look well set to win a fifth title in six years.

City, who are also chasing a treble, were without Kevin De Bruyne due to injury and looked subdued, with a more muted atmosphere at the Etihad Stadium than the previous week’s crucial victory over Arsenal.

Despite a slow start, the hosts created the better chances, with Jack Grealish hitting the post and Haaland having a low shot saved by the post. West Ham were missing key players due to illness, including Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek, and struggled to create clear-cut chances.

The breakthrough came early in the second half when Ake headed in from a free-kick before Haaland doubled the lead with his record-breaking goal. Foden’s deflected volley completed the scoring, and City coasted to the final whistle. Haaland’s achievement was recognized with a guard of honour from his teammates at the end of the match.

City’s win came on the 25th anniversary of the club’s lowest point when they were relegated to the third tier of English football. The transformation of the team since then has been remarkable, with the club now among the biggest in the world.

Despite their success, City’s fans were more subdued than usual, perhaps with next week’s trip to Real Madrid in mind.

Overall, the match was a comfortable victory for City, who showed their strength in depth by winning without their best player. Haaland’s record-breaking goal was the highlight of the night, and the Norwegian striker continues to demonstrate his remarkable scoring ability.

City’s next match against Real Madrid will be a tougher test, but they will be confident of getting a positive result and continuing their excellent season.
