Liverpool will likely be looking at a lot of possible targets in 2023 as they look to overhaul their midfield.

James Milner, Naby Keita, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are all set to become free agents in just six months and are therefore likely to depart Anfield, therefore the Reds need to improve their midfield.

Matheus Nunes

Liverpool is known to be a fan of Matheus Nunes; during the January transfer window, rumours about the club’s interest in the midfielder surfaced. Before Nunes, 24, signed for Wolves in a club-record £38 million deal, the Reds are rumoured to have thought about making an approach to him last summer.

Despite his lacklustre performance since joining the Premier League last summer, Nunes has a number of qualities that will appeal to Jürgen Klopp as he reorganizes his team. As seen by his 2.5 dribbles per 90 minutes for Sporting Lisbon’s previous season and his 3.3 dribbles per game during six games in the Champions League in 2021–2022, the Portuguese international carries the ball with assurance when in possession.

Since moving to Molineux, those numbers have not been replicated, but Nunes possesses the necessary traits to succeed in a Klopp midfield that combines great vigour and desire. To advance, his final product would need to be better, but Klopp has a track record of developing young talent into excellent players.

Mason Mount

With the failure of contract negotiations, Mason Mount might be on his way out of Chelsea this summer.

This summer, the 24-year-contract old’s at Stamford Bridge will expire after just 12 months, and if a new agreement cannot be reached, he may be made available for sale. Chelsea’s most recent offer, which is believed to have been far below contracts given to other members of the team, was rejected by Mount.

Mount has been a key contributor for Chelsea in recent years and has twice been named the west London club’s Player of the Season.

With 11 goals and eleven assists in the Premier League, he had his finest statistics year last year. The work ethic and final product of Mount may fit Klopp’s style as he attempts to rejuvenate the Reds’ engine room.

Declan Rice

Declan Rice is anticipated to leave West Ham this summer since the midfielder has been open about his desire to play at the highest level. To sign Rice, who has been linked to Arsenal, Manchester United, and Chelsea, West Ham has indicated that a British record sum will be required.

He would provide presence and dynamism to a midfield that has been too simple to play against this season. He is a superb ball-winner with an improved ability to move forward into the final third.

Rice is a different type of player due to his defensive prowess, and with Fabinho’s performance this year raising questions, the arrival of the West Ham captain might address a number of problems at Liverpool’s weak midfield.

Gabri Veiga

Gabri Veiga’s outstanding season with Celta Vigo has sparked significant interest in the Premier League.

Before this season, Veiga had made only one La Liga start. But, he has erupted for Celta this season, scoring nine goals and dishing out three assists in just 18 league games.

Real Madrid and England’s top clubs have taken notice of the 20-year-performances, old’s and Veiga has a €40 million (£35 million) release clause, making him an affordable alternative for teams looking for a spark in the middle of the field.

Khephren Thuram

The top clubs in Europe are on high alert owing to Khephren Thuram’s development, with Liverpool reportedly keeping an eye on the midfielder.

The 21-year-old, who has followed in the footsteps of his brother Marcus and father Lillian, received his first call-up to the French senior team this month.

The 6-foot-4 midfielder originally joined Nice in a defensive position, but this year he has excelled in a more forward position where his domination in duels and willingness to push the ball into dangerous areas have distinguished him in Ligue 1.
